“On the outskirts of a 700-acre Petworth House, this wonderful homely inn is worth a detour just to experience its charm. Friendly staff, delicious food and a cosy atmosphere make for a thoroughly enjoyable stay - for families, couples and lone escapees.”

Hotel review

Once frequented by the household cavalry while escorting gold bullion from London to the Navy in Portsmouth, this 300-year old inn sits on a hillside in the picturesque village of Tillington opposite All Hallows Church - a landmark worth mentioning due to its unusual Scots crown steeple and painted by both Constable and Turner. The charmingly quirky and atmospheric pub, low beamed and set out on several levels has the feel of an antique shop, decorated with vintage finds, fresh and dried flowers, mismatched candlelit tables, and chalkboard menus offering seasonal homegrown, foraged or locally sourced ingredients. Outside there’s a delightful garden with sheepskin-covered benches, straw bale seating, bunting, potted plants and a hammock. The cottagey-style rooms are equally appealing and informal with painted furniture and lovely surprises such as a rocking chair, floral eiderdown, homemade biscuits, poesies in jars and locally made lotions and potions. Utterly charming.
