In a city as chaotically bustling as Shanghai, pulling off the ‘urban resort’ concept hotel is a seemingly impossible task. But encircled by slate walls and hedges of bamboo, the PuLi genuinely manages to block the blare of West Nanjing Road into the background, cultivating a sense of privacy that comes as a real relief after a day out sightseeing. "Puli" in Chinese translates as ‘beautiful uncarved gem’, but there’s nothing rough about the accommodation here: replete with dark timbers, the rooms employ sleek, contemporary design tempered by Asian accents. Plus absurdly comfortable beds and bathtubs that are adjacent to wall-high windows overlooking Jingan district. A luxury urban hang-out in the heart of Shanghai.
