What Almaty’s Ritz-Carlton lacks in centrality (it’s a best-case fifteen-minute drive from the city center, and Almaty traffic can be atrocious) it makes up for in glamour and stature.
Rising above the swanky Esentai Shopping Mall, this hotel can be seen from most of the surrounding city, looking like a knife plunged into the earth. And vice versa: with floor-to-ceiling windows in each room, the views over Almaty and over to the Alatau Mountains are unmatched.
The hotel occupies floors 21 through 30 of the 37-story Esentai Tower in a peculiar layout: one first ascends to the lobby on the 30 th level, then descends to the rooms via separate in-house elevators. (The remaining floors are office space and residential.) The décor is somewhat staid, being heavily beige-on-brown, with marble accents and the occasional bas-relief horse set into the wall, an homage to Kazakhstan’s nomadic past. Yet the rooms are spacious and light, with plush king beds and comfortable furniture. Touchscreen controls are embedded in a sliding drawer of the bedside table, allowing just about everything to be done from prone. The bathrooms, done in jade-veined white marble, are bright and spacious; the rainfall-style shower and bathtub are so good, you’ll bathe here far more than necessary. That is, if you aren’t at the pool, or booked in for a signature hammam massage at the Six Senses Spa.
There are four restaurants and lounges onsite: On the 30th floor, is the casual, internationally styled Vista Restaurant (where the extravagant, buffet style breakfast is served), and the Sky Lounge & Bar, a great place to settle with a signature cocktail while looking out over the darkening city. Two floors down is the mixed sushi-European fine dining Seven Bar and Restaurant, and in the summer months, an outdoor grill experience can be had at the Terrace 77Restaurant. For something a little more local oriented, each day at 18:30, a Kazakh tea ceremony is offered in the lobby, providing the opportunity to try regional sweets, fruit, and drinks.
