Hotel Review

This neo-classical building - in, arguably, the city’s top spot for a hotel: next to the medieval Castle Keep and overlooking the river’s bridges - is deceptively big. The former County Hall for Northumberland, it’s built on a slope so that you enter at floor six where the main, rather grand, public rooms are - awash with mirrored pillars and tables, dark panelling and acres of inviting sofas. Bedrooms are large and spacious; some might find them a little corporate but they’re certainly comfortable with Queen-size beds in the twin rooms, smart black-velvet armchairs and marble-effect bathrooms. The best overlook the river; failing that, ask for one on the top two floors. There’s a choice of dining - smart in the restaurant or more casual in the bar, and do leave room for their sumptuous afternoon tea. One of the highlights of the hotel is that it offers a concierge service; local and very friendly chaps who can sort theatre tickets, and advise on local sights, bars and shopping.

The Vermont Hotel

Next to the Castle Keep, you couldn’t be closer to the historic heart of Newcastle. The former County Hall for Northumberland, The Vermont is an impressive neo-classical building; popular for weddings because of its art deco ballroom (former council chamber) and river views.
