About Meissen

Just north-west of Dresden, the riverside city of Meissen has long been famed for its delicate porcelain. Part of the Free State of Saxony, this pretty community of red-roofed houses and leafy lanes is studded with stunning heritage edifices, perfect for culture aficionados. Wonderful glimpses of the tranquil Elbe River can be spotted from around town — and you can expect beautiful views from some of the best places to stay in Meissen.

Originally a Slavic settlement, Meissen traces its roots back to at least the 10th century. The old town centre boasts some spectacular Gothic and Renaissance buildings, including the 13th-century Gothic Meissen Cathedral. Take a guided walking tour or stroll along at your own pace, stepping into the cathedral, the Meissen Frauenkirche, and the imposing Albrechtsburg. Now a museum, the castle was the first in the German-speaking world to be used as a royal residence.

Tours of porcelain studios will delight creative types; as will the summer pottery market, which draws artists from around the region. Hone your skills with wonderful clay workshops, or venture out into the surrounding countryside for days of hiking and cycling. This part of Saxony is well known for its wine, and tours and tastings and nearby vineyards come highly recommended. You can sample a glass or two of the good stuff at the best places to stay in Meissen, too!
