About Schleswig-Holstein

The northernmost region in Germany, Schleswig-Holstein sits just above Hamburg. Stretching up to the Danish border, with the North Sea on one side and the Baltic on the other, this is a fascinating part of the country. Kiel, the region’s capital, began life as a small port town and ship-building hub on the Baltic Sea. Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein's second-largest city, also has seafaring connections. Once a major player in the Hanseatic League, the city has a UNESCO-listed old town, and some excellent museums — it’s also reputedly the home of marzipan.

Schleswig-Holstein’s west coast, facing the Wadden Sea and the North Sea beyond, is studded with coastal resort towns, including lovely St Peter Ording. The North Sea islands of Sylt, Amrum and Föhr, amongst others, are immensely popular with nature lovers and active families. Expect golden sands, bird watching, cycling and hiking galore, as well as characterful hotels. There are just 11 guest rooms, and generous organic breakfasts are served each morning. An old town favourite.
Hotel Seiler Hof, a thatched Frisian farmhouse with flower-filled gardens on Sylt, has 11 guest rooms. Rustic furnishings, exposed beams and attractive pastel textiles warm whitewashed spaces. The friendly hosts are full of island recommendations, and generous breakfasts are a real highlight.
Hotel Haase in Lübeck, a charming brick townhouse, now houses four comfortable suites. Exposed beams and stonework add to the cosy atmosphere, whilst contemporary kitchenettes and bathrooms make this a hugely convenient choice for couples, friends or families with older children. A highly recommended old town bolthole.
Landhaus Altes Pastorat is a charming heritage hotel, set in part within the oldest house in Süderende on the island of Föhr. A thatched, red-brick building within lovely gardens, the hotel has comfortable, characterful guest rooms, as well as a small spa and a great regional restaurant. Lovely.
Haus Noge, another Sylt favourite, fuses traditional style with quirky touches. Expect maximalist interiors bedecked with arts, ornaments and antiques, with walls painted in warm blues and greens. An adult-only bolthole with hearty breakfasts and stacks of character, within walking distance of the coast.

For Families

Hotel Landhaus an de Dün in St Peter Ording has the feel of a classic coastal hotel, with comfortable rooms and suites, an indoor pool and wellness centre, and a relaxed restaurant. With the beach just moments away and activities aplenty in the area, this is an easygoing family favourite.
Hotel Benen Diken Hof on Sylt has the look and feel of a classic Frisian house, with a pitched thatched roof and pretty garden. Perfect for a family holiday, the hotel has spacious guest rooms, a great kids club and a superb spa for the grown-ups. Older children will adore taking surf lessons at the nearby beach.
Hotel Fuchsbau, just minutes from the beach in Timmendorfer Strand, has light, airy interiors with wooden floors and a sense of Scandi minimalism. Brilliant for families, the hotel has a big swimming pool, pampering spa and fantastic dining options. Activities abound.
Apart Hotel Seepferdchen, set within sight of the sea on Sylt, offers characterful apartments in a lovely residence. Sonnenresort Hüttmann, on Amrum, has comfortable guest rooms and suites with light, bright interiors and lovely views. For Foodies

Landhaus Stricker is a gorgeous little hotel close to Sylt's best beach. The Michelin-starred Bodendorf's restaurant has a fun, fresh feel, with six- to nine-course set menus featuring top-notch ingredients in a space filled with modern art. The 900-label wine cellar is very impressive too.
Strandhotel Fontana in Timmendorfer Strand has just 19 elegant guest rooms, as well as a superb Michelin-recommended restaurant. Feast on Nordic cuisine with an Asian twist, unwind at the serene spa, and amble onto the sand for wonderful walks. A lovely seaside spot.
Hotel & Restaurant Jörg Müller, a Sylt gem, has the feel of country cottage. Charming rooms feature pine furnishings and sink-into beds topped with traditional quilts. The big draw is the fantastic gourmet restaurant, with its seasonal multi-course menus of regional classics. Warm and inviting.

FOR an Island Retreat

Landhaus Severin's, close to Sylt's eastern coast, has an appealingly laid-back feel. Ideal for nature lovers, the thatched building is surrounded by verdant meadows, and is a great place for bird watching. Unwind in elegant guest rooms, kick back at the spa, or savour regional dishes at the restaurant. Lovely.
Hotel Parkresidenz Christian VIII is a charming country escape, with 12 individually designed guest rooms featuring block printed textiles, fine ceramics, classic wallpapers and pretty pastel tones. The swimming pool and spa are superb, and generous breakfasts set guests up for another day in Sylt. Very romantic.

For Waterfront Views

Hotel Kieler Yacht Club sits right on the harbour in Kiel. Expect minimalist, modern guest rooms with views over the Fjord or Düsternbrook Forest. The restaurant and bar have an appealingly lively feel, and the city's waterways are wonderfully accessible. Cycling along the riverfront or set sail!
Vitalhotel Alter Meierhof, an indulgent spot along the coast from Glücksburg, offers wonderfully inviting guest rooms and suites, with oak beds and antique furnishings. Hearty breakfasts are available, and families are welcome. Also great value.
Smucke Steed offers simple, stylish guest rooms in a brick building in Glücksburg's Sandwig district. Understated yet comfortable, the B&B is within walking distance of the beach, and promises generous breakfasts. Intimate and tranquil.
Kontorhaus Keitum has simple, stylish contemporary interiors. Offering great service and very reasonable rates, it's an excellent base for exploring Sylt. An intimate, adults-only spot with clean lines, Scandi-inspired pale wood, and striking views from private patios.
