About Camaiore

At the heart of Camaiore is your classic Tuscan walled medieval city. One one side are the Apuan Alps, and on the other side is Versilia, a region famous for its olives, wine and strawberries, so a number of our recommendations for the best places to stay in Camaiore offer wine and olive tastings, and the city has some excellent restaurants. Camaiore is also perfectly positioned for the beaches along the coastline around Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi. The varied appeal of Camaiore translates into a great variety of accommodation, from purpose-built contemporary hotels, to more traditional offerings, plus argiturismos and converted farmhouses, villas and estates (some of them wine estates).

Camaiore is an easy destination to recommend for foodies, and some of the best places to stay here actually have some of the best places to eat in town on-site. The oldest part of Camaiore, the historic hill town founded by the Romans in 190BC, is also an excellent pick for anyone seeking to connect with Italy's past, with its labyrinthine mass of winding cobbled streets that surround beautiful examples of Tuscan medieval architecture, Romanesque churches and palazzos. There are also a number of great archaeological and art museums, and a good range of shops.

Camaiore is good for families, because it’s close to the Lido de Camaiore, a beach resort just north of Viareggio offering four sandy kilometres of Mediterranean coastline, and for outdoor types, who will appreciate the walking and biking trails running from the town into the Apuan Alps. It is also close to Lucca, with its beautiful gardens, and Torre del Lago, loved by Puccini. If you’re wondering when to visit, Camaiore hosts an impressive Corpus Domini feast, as part of their Easter celebrations, and it’s a fascinating time to visit if you’re interested in Italy’s religious present. The best places to stay in Camaiore do book up around this time, though, so it will pay to plan your trip early.

The Best Places to Stay in Camaiore

For a historic B&B

  • For a stunning conversion of a historic Benedictine Convent in the centre of town, you need to book Badia Giulia. It boasts six beautifully designed rooms and suites (the best with private sauna and steam room) with many original features, plus a pretty garden and hot tub for lazy days in the sun.

For a Relaxing Holiday

  • Locanda al Colle is a friendly and stylish seven-room guesthouse, with fantastic views and lots of art. Each of the rooms has been individually designed and decorated, but they all feature parquet floors, beamed ceilings, neutral colour schemes and large bathrooms. Some have private balconies or terraces. There’s a heated pool, but no restaurant — though they do offer breakfast, and cooking classes, along with yoga, sailing and cycling tours by arrangement. This is a stylish and romantic spot, but due to the size, it’s also family friendly.

For a Rural Retreat

  • Villa La Bianca is an enchanting Tuscan villa conversion with six rooms, two pools and a big garden. Ideal if you're looking for somewhere quieter. The decor is a stylish collection of colours and antiques, individually chosen for each room and communal space; the sitting room is cosy and peaceful, the conservatory and restaurant welcoming. Perfect for a relaxed holiday for couples, families or small groups.

Prefer a Self-catering Apartment or villa?

  • Sometimes a villa or apartment is the best option if you're travelling in a larger group, so if you decide that you'd prefer a self catering option, check out our online booking partner, booking.com for some inspiration.

Travel Information

  • Camaiore’s closest airport is Pisa Airport, which is about half an hour away by road, or two hours by public transport. Some visitors may find Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci useful, which is also fairly close, about an hour away by road, or three hours by bus, four on the train.
  • If you're looking to hire a car, we recommend visiting our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Camaiore is just back from the Tyrrhenian Sea, so benefits from sea breezes that keep it from baking quite so much as Tuscany’s interior, but the summer temperatures are still up around 30°C. Easter and Christmas are always special times to visit Italy, and nearby Viareggio hosts a carnival, one of the largest in Italy, late February through early May.
