Tuscany’s jaw-dropping landscapes are such a staple of travel guides and supplements that we challenge anyone not to want to visit her terracotta soils, atmospheric hilltop hamlets, and graze on her bounty. But with popularity comes choice, and the accommodation options in Tuscany continue to expand year on year, so that choosing the best places to stay in Tuscany is a serious challenge. Once Tuscany’s accommodation options were restricted to converted villas and farmhouses, or traditional hotels and pensiones, but today there are also spa hotels and wine resorts, converted castles and monasteries, and restaurants with rooms, whole country estates and even entirely converted hamlets!

For a stand-out stay in Tuscany, you'd be hard pushed to better Borgo Santo Pietro. This stunning estate turned five star luxury hideaway offers beautifully elegant rooms and suites — think regal proportions, chandeliers, marble fireplaces, frescoes and silk upholstery — plus a fabulous spa offering a range of treatments using their own bespoke products and two restaurants dedicated to farm-to-table zero kilometres dining. Not only is it ideal for a romantic getaway, but they welcome families too.
The Hotelito Lupaia is a totally charming and luxuriously converted farmhouse in a secluded spot in the Tuscan hills, with just eight rooms and suites and lush gardens with a pool and a view. Each of the rooms has been individually restored and renovated to complement the beautiful original features — like decorative wall paint, beamed ceilings, fireplaces and terracotta floors — and with a drive to provide every contemporary comfort. The restaurant is equally charming, and offers cooking classes if you want to take something memorable home with you. You can take scenic walks right from the door, or borrow the hotel’s bikes and explore on two wheels.
Monteverdi offers the very best of Tuscany in its seven rooms and three suites. The very best local gastronomic cuisine, a sparkling infinity pool with an incredible view of the Tuscan hills, and really charming decor — we’re talking huge stand-alone bathtubs, four-poster beds and log fires.

For a Special Occassion

For all of Tuscany’s bells and whistles rolled into one consider the Castello Banfi Il Borgo, a stunning 13th century hilltop castle, surrounded by its own vast wine estate, and, to complete the picture, two restaurants, an enoteca, a balsameria, and the cellar of a vineyard. It also has a pool with an incredible vineyard view, and several super chic bars. Book the chef’s table for a real foodie treat, and look out for invitations for numerous wine tastings and winery tours.

For Florence

The Palazzo Niccollini al Duomo is a fabulous grand palazzo brimming with original features — like murals and frescoes, marble fireplaces, gilt, art and antiques — in an unbeatable location overlooking the Duomo. Family owned and run, its ten rooms are beautiful and very Florence.
Or, for more a more contemporary foray into the charms of Florence, consider the Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni, located on the most fashionable shopping street in town, and with a roof terrace offering Duomo views. Discreet and very comfortable, its 24 rooms and suites are all unique, but all stylishly simple. It’s got a great restaurant and chic bar too.
The Helvetia & Bristol has been the home-from-home choice of the international elite since the 17th Century, who no doubt have appreciated its elegant, old-fashioned luxury and 67 charming, classically styled rooms. The rooms vary a lot in size, but our Gurus attest that they’re all very comfortable. Its Mediterranean restaurant has a view of the Piazza Strozzi.

For Siena

In Siena the Grand Hotel Continental gets our top vote. Our Gurus love it for the grand murals and frescoes in the public salons, its Murano glass chandeliers, and for the elegant decor in the 51 rooms and suites. They also appreciate the impeccable service.

For Romantics

Florence’s Ferragamo-owned Hotel Lungarno, is our pick if you’re looking for a romantic hotel in town. Its 73 rooms and suites make it one of the larger picks for the best hotels in Tuscany, but its location right on the Arno, and its vertical layout, make it feel quite intimate. Our favourite rooms have balconies over the Arno. The decor is unfussily traditional and luxurious, and each room has original artworks. The bar and restaurant are favourite haunts too.

For Foodies

Il Falconiere is a classic 17th Tuscan villa hotel, idyllically positioned by its own vineyards, and offering 22 spacious and elegantly furnished rooms and suites, with a romantically traditional feel and frescoed walls. Its restaurant has a Michelin star, and they run cooking classes and wine tastings. There’s a pool and spa for relaxing afterwards, and the location, just outside Cortona, is ideal for both wine tastings and sightseeing.
Tenuta San Pietro is a small villa in a beautiful spot just outside Lucca, surrounded by an olive farm and rows of vines. Within are ten rooms and suites, cleverly designed and simply decorated to make the most of the original features. But what we love this villa for its its gourmet restaurant, serving regional cuisine, which you can learn more about in their cooking classes. They run art classes as well, and there’s an outdoor pool with a wonderful view.
Il Patriarca is a very affordable foodie-friendly pick: a 22 room hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant and dreamy vineyard views. The menu is typically Tuscan, as is the impressive wine list. The decor is traditionally romantic, with numerous four-poster beds, plush fabrics and floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s slightly out of the way, close to the border with Umbria, which is why it’s so affordable.

For Vineyard Views

The Borgo San Felice is an entire country hamlet, surrounded by panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. The 33 rooms, suites and apartments are in a collection of beautiful stone houses, arranged around a pool, winery, chapel, bar and a restaurant with a beautiful terrace. This is the perfect place from which to taste wine, take strolls, go ballooning or horse riding, eat well and explore the surrounding beauty. If you like the sound of this ryral idyl you might want to consider one of Tuscany's many agriturismo?

For a Rural Retreat

The Fontelunga Hotel & Villas is a gorgeous Tuscan villa in the countryside not far from Cortona. Here you'll find nine individually designed rooms, plus two chic villas in the grounds — the villas have a shared pool and are perfect for families or small groups. Great onsite facilities — including a tennis court, pool and hot tub — mean you can happily while away the hours without needing to leave the beautiful grounds, but there are some beautiful hilltop towns nearby, and the hotel has mountain bikes you’re welcome to visit them on.
Sister property to Fontelunga is Borgo 69, a stunning collection of one, two and three bedroom villas which offer a luxurious home from home for those who prefer a more independent/private set up. The villas share a lovely infinity pool and have access to all the best bits of the hotel above.
The Vedetta Relais is a glorious little find that oozes country house chic. Its eight suites are all quirky and individually designed, plus there are a further eight lodges dotted amid olive groves for those who prefer back to nature glamping. There are lovely gardens and a pool, plus sublime Tuscan views, and you're only 10 minutes from the beach.

For Families

The Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort is a gorgeous country estate in the Tuscan hills. There's a good range of rooms, suites and apartments — with family suites that can sleep up to five — and great facilities, including an outdoor pool, an excellent restaurant and art and cookery classes. The views over olive groves and cypress trees are classic Tuscany, and no one could ever be bored here!

For an Intimate Escape

Le Fontanelle offers five stars worth of views, over olive groves, lemon trees and vineyards, plus five stars worth of decor when it comes to the 25 rooms, suites and apartments arranged within the stone buildings of a charming hamlet. They also offer five star food in the elegant restaurant, and a five star pool and spa.

For Great Value

The Villa Le Barone is a gorgeous, 14th century Tuscan villa with spectacular views over the countryside of Chianti, a winery, and a restaurant offering cooking classes. The decor is traditional and romantic, with exposed beams, lovely fabrics and antique furniture. Plus there's a heated salt water pool, and a lovely array of outdoor seating in the garden or courtyards. Dinner is served on the candlelit terrace.
The Hotel della Fortezza occupies an 11th century fortress with beautiful and commanding views over its hilltop town Sorano, and the surrounding region. The hotel has 16 rooms and suites, simply and traditionally decorated, with terracotta tiled floors, exposed beams on the ceiling, whitewashed walls and dark wood antiques. More affordable because it’s off the tourist trail, it’s none the less a gorgeous part of the world.

Best B&Bs

Casa Howard is a chic B&B guesthouse converted from a Florentine palazzo. Owned by textile designers, their forte is very much in evidence in all of the individually designed rooms. With fresh flowers everywhere and honesty bars on each floor, it's definitely amongst the best places if you're looking for a home from home feel.
The Campo Regio Relais is a superb little B&B tucked away along a pretty via in the centre of Siena. Its six romantic rooms are furnished with well selected antiques, and beautiful fabrics, and there's a roof terrace with wonderful views over Siena’s historic rooftops.

Travel Information

Pisa Airport is Tuscany’s largest; it’s well served by both the low-cost carriers and the big international airlines. It’s also well connected to most other main towns — except Siena — by a fast train service. Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci international airport is another option, but has more limited connections.

Tuscany is large and varied, so it’s difficult to generalise about the best time to visit. But broadly speaking Tuscany is popular, but very hot and very busy, during the summer months — especially August; quieter, and with pleasant weather in spring; stunning in autumn; quite cool and dark, but still beautiful in winter — especially around Christmas.
