About Redruth

Redruth is situated on the trunk road between London and Land’s End, just to the east of St. Ives, the west of Truro, north east of Penzance, and north west of Falmouth. It’s still got a market town atmosphere, but grew wealthy off its 18th century mining industry, so the centre of town is an elegant array of Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian architecture — Redruth was once home to one of the riches square miles in the UK, which included the world’s first ever gas-lit townhouse. Some of the best places to stay in Redruth have been converted from historic mansions and townhouses.

As well as being an excellent choice for a central Cornish base, Redruth offers guests excellent market-town shopping, an impressive clock tower, a pretty parish church, an old castle and prehistoric remains — just outside of town. There are also numerous reminders of the area’s mining past, some which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best places to stay in Redruth put guests within a very short drive of many Cornish treasures, including Newquay and Padstow, and it’s only 25 minutes drive from St. Michael’s Mount, half an hour from Bodmin, and just 45 minutes from the Eden Project. A perfect base for exploring Cornwall by car!

For Romantics

  • The Penventon Park Hotel is a converted Georgian mansion given an opulent makeover in its journey towards becoming a 63 room boutique hotel. Each of the rooms and suites has been individually decorated and designed, with effects that range from “stylish country glamour” to “Georgian garret romance” — but includes largely contemporary pieces. The Copper Bar is dark and atmospheric — with more than 160 different gins to try, the restaurant is romantic, and the gym and spa large, with a heated pool.

Travel Information

  • Cornwall Airport Newquay is the closest airport to Redruth. It’s about half an hour away by car or taxi, or about two hours by bus. Redruth is about four and a half hours from London by train, via Exeter.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Cornwall is busiest in the summer, but because Redruth isn’t on the coast, it’s not as impacted by the summer crowds as some centres. If you’re coming to Cornwall to walk, the best time is probably late spring, early summer, when the skies are clearest and days long, but there’s not really a bad time to visit Redruth — as long as you pack your wet weather gear and make peace with the UK’s changeable weather.
