The beautifully designed rooms spill out to private balconies, there are two superb restaurants (including the Michelin-starred Lakeside Restaurant, with its fab lake views), but for many the icing on the cake is the spacious, pampering rooftop spa, with its stunning indoor/outdoor infinity pool and incredible views.

A charming B&B

Hadley's B&B is on the homelier end of the spectrum, a lovely boutique B&B set in an old hospital with a great cafe. Though it's in a quiet district, it's only a short walk from the buzz of St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn, and there's a metro station nearby, making sightseeing very easy (the hearty breakfasts help too!). Low key and totally charming.
