A World Heritage Site and home to two-thirds of the world’s population of one-horned rhinos, Kaziranga National Park is the best place to spot these beasts. Accommodation here is somewhat limited but our pick of the best places to stay in Kaziranga National Park are ideally situated for exploring its expansive grasslands.

Hunting used to be a popular pastime in these parts, and the rhino population fell to just 200 odd at the turn of the 20th century. These days, following some extensive conservation practices, it has soared to over 1800 strong so you have excellent odds of spotting one of these gargantuan creatures. These notoriously grumpy animals seem to live harmoniously alongside the region's elephant population and there is also abundance of birdlife and deer.

Visit between November and April for the best weather and sightings.
