Koh Russey — which translates as Bamboo Island — is a verdant hideaway just four-and-a-half kilometres off the coast of Sihanoukville. Golden beaches fringed by palm trees, tranquil azure waters and warm sunshine are the main attractions for visitors to the island, who dream of a quiet refuge within easy reach of Cambodia's liveliest seaside city. Small and largely unspoilt, the island is home to one superb resort — and this is undoubtedly the best place to stay on Koh Russey.
Only fifteen minutes from the Cambodian coast by boat, this little oasis in the Gulf of Thailand is brilliant for laid-back beachgoers eager to kick back on the sand, build sandcastles or paddle in the shallows. More active adventurers can enjoy scenic strolls, or kayaking, paddle boarding, diving and snorkelling in clear ocean waters of Ream National Park. The nearby island of Koh Ta Kiev is home to a mesmerising jungle ecosystem with over 250 species of birds, rare orchids, flying lizards and bat caves to spot and discover. Boat trips to hip Koh Rong, a little further afield, also come highly recommended.
For a youthful buzz and big evenings out, head across to Sihanoukville, which is famed for its late-night parties. If you have more relaxed, romantic sundowners in mind, the best place to stay in Koh Russey promises delectable dinners with spectacular sea views, just moments from your suite. What more could you ask for?
