About Narbonne

Tantalisingly close to the Mediterranean, historic Narbonne was once a prosperous port town. Having fallen from favour with the shifting of the path of the River Aude in the 14th Century, this fascinating city now boasts a profusion of Roman ruins, a lively evening scene and an appealing proximity to coastal lagoons and islets. Whether in the heart of town or tucked amongst the vineyards which surround it, you’ll find some superb accommodation options in this part of Aude. Fit for a range of tastes and budgets, the best places to stay in Narbonne promise something very special.

Keen historians will delight in exploring the Abbaye de Fontfroide and its manicured gardens, visiting the Cathédrale St-Just and the Palais des Archeveques, and soaking up the views from the Donjon Gilles Aycelin. Begun in 1272, the enormously ambitious cathedral project was never finished, standing instead as a testament to Narbonne’s dramatic change in fortunes. For Roman ruins, look to the Via Domitia and the Horreum, or take a guided walking tour of the town centre: experts can point out all manner of curious details.

Venture inland to enjoy tours and tastings at top-notch vineyards, or make your way towards the coast for scenic walks, hikes, horse rides and cycling trails. The picturesque Canal de la Robine is wonderful for sunset strolls, whilst the 1901-built Les Halles market is foodie favourite. Tuck in to seasonal specialities in the town’s many eateries, or at one of the best places to stay in Narbonne.
