About Gangtok

Clinging on to a vertiginous outcrop, Gangtok gazes out across the Yumthang valley. Established in the 1840s as a Buddhist pilgrimage route, it still sees a steady flow of devotees, mala beads, prayer wheels in hand, passing through its streets today. It also serves as a pit stop for would be mountaineers enticed by the Himalaya’s siren call. Our pick of the best places to stay in Gangtok all provide an indulgent stay.

From Rumtek to Tsomgo Lake there are plenty of picturesque (and of varying difficulty) treks. It is a great place to recharge one’s batteries before and after embarking into the wilderness. But be warned: whilst the winters in Gangtok itself may seldom reach minus figures, many of the passes remain inaccessible. The best time to visit therefore, is between March and June.

A centre for Tibetan Buddhism, those interested in the culture and religion of Gangtok will appreciate the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. housed in a traditional Tibetan style mansion it is a fascinating and superbly curated museum.
