Gallipoli

It's fair to say Gallipoli is living up to the Greek translation of its name, 'beautiful city'. What To Expect

Part of Gallipoli's charm is that it's a working fishing town, it's not just resting on its beautiful laurels. So while Gallipoli definitely feels like a seaside town in the height of summer - what with bars and restaurants taking advantage of the fantastic views from the fortress walls - it still has a life out of season. It is a great place to base yourself to see some of Puglia's charms.

Gallipoli is well known for its beautiful beaches: both the city's own beach, La Spiaddia della Purita, and the long stretches of sand to the north and south of Gallipoli. These are perfect beaches for families, with clear water and long, gentle sloping sand.

The History

The wonderful walls were built around this fishing village to protect it from the sea - both from the water and attackers. Gallipoli has a long history and thanks to its strategic trade position, often found itself under siege. Greek, then Roman, then sacked by Vandals and Goths, then rebuilt by the Byzantines. There are many layers to Gallipoli's architecture. This was also a wealthy port, so the churches, courtyards and palaces are very fine examples of their eras.

What Not To Miss

• The highest point on the island is the Baroque Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, with its beautiful artworks and stunning architecture. This 17th century spot is a good place to start your explorations.
• The castle, the fish markets and the fascinating offerings of the 19th Century Museo Civico are also worth exploring. As is the Frantoio Ipogeo, an ancient olive press.
• If you want to see more of Puglia, Gallipoli is well placed for day trips to Lecce, Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca.

• Weather-wise, trhe best time to visit is August, when the average temperature rises to 25°C. However this is peak season. For a quieter and cheaper visit consider coming in May or September when the weather is still warm enough to make the most out of the beaches.
