About Gallipoli

It's fair to say Gallipoli is living up to the Greek translation of its name, 'beautiful city'. Gallipoli's wonderful old town is built on an island, protected by a robust 13th century fortress, only connected to mainland Puglia and modern Gallipoli by a 17th Century bridge - and many of the best places to stay in Gallipoli can be found here.

What To Expect

Part of Gallipoli's charm is that it's a working fishing town, it's not just resting on its beautiful laurels. So while Gallipoli definitely feels like a seaside town in the height of summer - what with bars and restaurants taking advantage of the fantastic views from the fortress walls - it still has a life out of season. It is a great place to base yourself to see some of Puglia's charms.

Gallipoli is well known for its beautiful beaches: both the city's own beach, La Spiaddia della Purita, and the long stretches of sand to the north and south of Gallipoli. These are perfect beaches for families, with clear water and long, gentle sloping sand.

The History

The wonderful walls were built around this fishing village to protect it from the sea - both from the water and attackers. Gallipoli has a long history and thanks to its strategic trade position, often found itself under siege. Greek, then Roman, then sacked by Vandals and Goths, then rebuilt by the Byzantines. There are many layers to Gallipoli's architecture. This was also a wealthy port, so the churches, courtyards and palaces are very fine examples of their eras.

What Not To Miss

  • The highest point on the island is the Baroque Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, with its beautiful artworks and stunning architecture. This 17th century spot is a good place to start your explorations.
  • The castle, the fish markets and the fascinating offerings of the 19th Century Museo Civico are also worth exploring. As is the Frantoio Ipogeo, an ancient olive press.
  • If you want to see more of Puglia, Gallipoli is well placed for day trips to Lecce, Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca.

Don't forget that this charming town is extremely busy during the peak summer months, so if want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Gallipoli in July or August, get organised and book well ahead.

    For A Masseria

      • If you're looking for somewhere special, one of the best places to stay in Gallipoli and its surrounding area is Masseria Bernardini. The original building was built in the 15th century, but has been recently renovated while keeping the wonderful original features and details. So there are open fires, inviting private patios and fresh modern art. With only seven rooms, this hotel feels intimate, and is perfect for a romantic country escape.
      • Set in a picturesque garden, Masseria Li Foggi epitomises rustic chic. Boasting simple yet stylish whitewashed rooms, the hotel also has a number of boats moored at the harbour, so you should definitely hire one and take it out for the day exploring the coast.

      For Sea Views

        • If you're looking for a waterfront location and your own private beach, then La Riviera is the place for you. This townhouse hotel is charmingly decorated inside with colourful murals and antiques, so each of the rooms and all the public spaces feel intimate. There's no restaurant, so it's B&B style accommodation, with some of the larger family rooms sleeping up to four - so it's ideal if you're travelling in a group or with your family.
        • The boutique Palazzo Mosco Inn, boasting views over the marina, offers romantic accommodation - think mosaic floors, iron bedsteads and creamy furnishings - from as little as €89 per night. Enjoy a tipple on the rooftop terrace and take the beach shuttle each morning to make the most out of your coastal location.
        • The 5* Palazzo Del Corso features romantic whitewashed rooms, complete with four posters and private balconies, as well as a rooftop terrace boasting superb sea views. Tuck into top-notch seafood from the restaurant and feel a million miles away from all your worries as you unwind in the wellness centre.
        • If you want to be in very heart of the old town, book the Corte Palmieri. Hidden in amongst winding alleyways and courtyards, right by the cathedral, this charming old building still manages a few sea views - the roof terrace where breakfast is served has some of the best views in town. Traditional and whitewashed on the outside, the hotel's 22 rooms are modern and chic on the inside.
