About Onomichi

A hilly port city in southwestern Japan, Onomichi has long attracted outdoorsy travellers and culture aficionados. Just over an hour from Hiroshima and Okayama, it’s a lively waterside destination for a holiday as a couple or with family and friends. There’s a small choice of excellent accommodation options to choose from, and we're excited to see new spots opening up with increasing frequency. Our list of the best places to stay in Onomichi highlights a trendy warehouse conversion for design-minded adventurers.

Onomichi's main attraction is the Temple Walk, which connected 25 ancient temples, including the iconic Senkō-ji Temple, the Jōdo-ji Temple and the ornate Taho-to Temple. You'll discover no shortage of panoramic views — if you’re willing to make the climb! Mount Senkōji is superb, and can be accessed by cable car if you’re less keen to hike or mountain bike up the hill. Mount Shirataki and Mount Takami are also long-standing favourites. Back in town, the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art is well worth visiting, as is the recently regenerated waterfront district.

Kick back at one of the best places to stay in Onomichi after big days of trekking, biking and marvelling at the magnificent temples which dot the surrounding hills.
