About Trondheim
Boasting a rich history, vibrant culture and stunning natural beauty, Trondheim is the ideal destination for adventurers looking to explore Norway outside of Oslo. Located in the north-central part of the country, the city is a hub of learning — as home to several universities, museums and other attractions — as well as being a source of lively nightlife with a selection of bars, clubs and restaurants. Our selection of the best places to stay in Trondheim includes a mix of large city hotels and smaller accommodation options.
Check out all that Trondheim has on offer with a visit to one of its many treasures, the Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum. Surrounding the castle ruins of King Sverre's Castle, the highlight of the museum is its living history; relive Trondheim’s past through interactive events, including theatrical performances and live storytelling.
For further insight into Trondheim’s history, visit to the Kristiansten Fortress and the stunning Stiftsgården. The fortress, built after the city fire of 1681, is a museum which has been modernized to include a defensive tower, Donjonen. Stiftsgården is a wooden palace which has been home to the Norwegian Royal family since 1804.
Trondheim’s grandest attraction is Nidaros Cathedral, originally constructed between 1070-1300 and renovated in the 19th century. An important destination for pilgrims and an active place of worship, the cathedral houses a crucifix by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, as well as two principal altars and a magnificent organ. The annual Olavsoka festival is a religious and cultural event not to be missed.
Finally, don’t forget to stop by the Archbishop's Palace in Trondheim, one of the largest medieval stone structures in Scandinavia. Visit the residence of the Archbishop of Nidaros, now home to several museums, and explore its extensive grounds. With so much to explore, Trondheim is the great cultural destination for curious travelers. Make sure to book well in advance to ensure you secure a great place to stay!
