Amarante is a lovely romanesque city located in the Porto district of northern Portugal. It has a long and fascinating history. Originally Roman in origin, the city first grew substantially in the early thirteenth century with the inspiration of the Dominican monk {later Saint) Goncalo. He built the bridge over the river Tamega and many other notable buildings. It subsequently became a place of pilgrimage. There are many interesting churches, monasteries and convents to visit, and the best places to stay in Amarante make an ideal base for discovering both the town and the wider region.
The city spreads over both banks of the Tamega river and the old town centre is dominated by many cafes and restaurants along the steep banks of the river.
Aside from sight-seeing there is much to do including cycling, walking and an 18 hole golf course…
The town is growing in popularity not just as a getaway for Porto residents (it's one hour east of the city), but for overseas visitors too. So if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Amarante during the peak season, we advise you to book ahead.
