Amarante is a lovely romanesque city located in the Porto district of northern Portugal. It has a long and fascinating history. Originally Roman in origin, the city first grew substantially in the early thirteenth century with the inspiration of the Dominican monk {later Saint) Goncalo. He built the bridge over the river Tamega and many other notable buildings. It subsequently became a place of pilgrimage. There are many interesting churches, monasteries and convents to visit, and the best places to stay in Amarante make an ideal base for discovering both the town and the wider region.

The city spreads over both banks of the Tamega river and the old town centre is dominated by many cafes and restaurants along the steep banks of the river.

• Ponte de Sao Goncalo: this famous old bridge is very historic but also a very peaceful spot to relax and enjoy
• Sao Goncalo Church - The burial place of the Saint, the interior is huge and majestic.
• Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Museum. A former convent, this is now a gallery exhibiting the work of early 20th century cubist artist and local.

• Fly to Porto, about 63km west of Amarante.
• Best time to visit if you want fine weather is during the summer months when the average daily highs peak around the 32 degrees celcius. July and August are also the driest. However if you want to avoid the crowds, we'd recommend a visit in May, June, September or October.
