Far less developed than popular Mallorca and Ibiza, Menorca has carved out its own niche as a more laid-back, family-friendly holiday destination. The second-largest of the Balearic Islands, it is rich in natural beauty, and boasts an increasingly varied hotel scene. Whether you’re dreaming of tranquil rural farmhouse retreats or chic little beach hotels, our Gurus’ choice of the best places to stay in Menorca has something to suit all tastes and budgets.
Some of our Menorca collections:
Mahón, the island's capital, is also the site of its international airport. Set at one end of the world’s second largest natural harbour on Menorca’s eastern coast, it’s a brilliant gateway to the rest of the island. Expect a charming old town with a surprisingly significant English influence, reflecting the fact that the island was under British rule for much of the 18th Century. Base yourself here for a lively café scene, picturesque surroundings and easy access to the beaches of the east. Ciutadella, Menorca’s other hub, was its previous capital. Boasting distant views of Mallorca to the west, it’s also built around a lovely port. Galleries, boutiques and eateries abound, and the easygoing vibe is very appealing.
Menorca’s many miles of unspoilt beaches are perfect for sunbathing, sea swims and surfing. Arenall d'en Castell is a particular favourite. Keen sailors will find a plethora of opportunities to get out on the water at points around the island, as well as excellent RYA courses. Day trips to Isla del Rey, to the east, are brilliant, as are visits to the spectacular Cales Coves, a site of Bronze Age significance encircled by limestone cliffs. Cyclists and on-foot explorers can follow marked hiking routes or travel the circumference of the island on the ancient Cami de Cavalls, soaking up magical views en route. If you’re planning an active trip, consider travelling in the cooler spring and autumn months — you’ll also find the best places to stay in Menorca much quieter.
