About Herm
Herm is a lush, green island just off the coast of Guernsey — around 20 minutes away by ferry. It’s only one and a half miles long, and half a mile wide, which means there’s a lot of spectacular coastline. And, the its small size means the fact that Herm is car-free is a pleasure rather than an inconvenience! Don’t worry, the best places to stay on Herm will send a horse and buggy, or a tractor or quad bike, to greet you and help with your bags.
Many of Herm’s businesses are owned by the same company, including the pub, and all the best places to stay on Herm. The strictness about cars, and bikes — which are also banned — is very popular locally, and we love the island for its peace, and the feeling of being magically unspoilt.
Herm's beaches — the best of which can be found along the northernly shore of the island — offer sandy idylls to rival the Caribbean. The southern shores are rockier and more dramatic, fantastic for snorkelers and rock-poolers. Its interior is lush and rocky too, and there are even a couple of hills. So, even though the island is small, the best places to stay on Herm are likely to appeal to walkers. Herm is also ideal for families and anyone who wants a holiday that offers total escape, or a trip back in time. Tourism is one of the most important industries to Herm, and every summer around 100,000 visitors arrive on the island. So if you want to guarantee your room, get organised and book well ahead!
The Best Places to Stay in Herm
For an Island Escape
- The White House Hotel is the real thing, a place with no TVs, iPod docking stations, telephones, or anything like that. And it’s located on a car-free island. These 40 rooms and suites have a loyal fan-base, though, with many people coming back year after year, mostly because they love the laid-back atmosphere and feeling of escape. The rooms range from comfortable singles to large family suites. There’s a choice of places to eat: the informal Ship Inn pub and brasserie, or the 2 AA Rosette awarded Conservatory Restaurant. Not forgetting the lovely pool and lush gardens, and, of course, the lush island beyond.

Travel Information
- Herm isn’t the easiest destination to get to, and you need to remember that once you get there you won’t have use of a car. If you’re planning to fly to Herm, the closest airport is Guernsey Airport, from where you need to get to the ferry at St. Peter Port, and catch a ferry across to Herm. The ferry journey is only 20 minutes. Jersey Airport is another option, though from there you still need to catch the ferry via St. Peter Port — and a ferry from St. Helier before that. Alderney Airport is just one ferry journey away, though it takes about three hours.

- The Channel Islands enjoy more sunshine than most of the UK, while still remaining lush and green. They make an ideal beach break, especially if you’re interested in a bucket-and-spade holiday, and there are some wonderful walking opportunities. Because of their sandy beaches, the Channel Islands are a popular summer holiday destination, but there are lots of reason to visit the Channel Islands in spring and early autumn too.
