About North Adams

North Adams sits in the north-west corner of New England's famous Berkshires, enjoying the curious distinction of being both the smallest city in Massachusetts and the site of the largest art gallery in the United States. Brilliant for both culture buffs and outdoorsy types, this charming city is at its best in the autumn, when the leaves in the surrounding forests dazzle with their reds, oranges and golds. Accommodation options in the area range from cosy inns to swish boutique properties fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Some of the best places to stay in North Adams are near the city centre, but we do have a favourite rural riverside retreat, too.

The city’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, with its 19 galleries scattered across 13 acres of grounds. Catch a performance at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, which has a lively annual events programme, pop into quirky art galleries and boutiques, or admire the Sanford Blackinton Mansion before exploring the pretty Berkshire hubs of Lenox and Pittsfield.

Nature lovers will delight in visiting the Natural Bridge State Park, hiking to the summit of Mount Greylock, or kayaking, fishing, sailing and swimming on Windsor Lake. Trek, horse ride or cycle a portion of the Appalachian Trail or the Hoosac Range Trail if you can. The real daredevils can try skydiving!

Round off your days with tours and tastings at the area’s many craft beer and gin distilleries. With heaps of cultural and outdoorsy activities on offer, the best places to stay in North Adams promise a marvellous holiday for families, friends or couples.
