20 Best Boutique Hotels in Andalucía
Andalucía’s location, on the very bottom of Spain, overlooking the waters toward Morocco, has meant that it also occupies a place between east and west, and Christianity and Islam, and this cultural verge dictates a unique look and culture. And uniqueness also breeds variety, and that’s why we think this region has so many really delightful boutique hotels. They’re all so different in style, fusing their own mash-up of the convergence of aesthetics. And once you add to that the spectacular scenery and lively centres, you have a region capable of delivering some seriously unique places to stay. Our Hotel Gurus have sifted through a range of chic little hideaways, swanky city pads and everything inbetween to select the best boutique hotels in Andalucía. Hopefully it was worth it to give you a fantastic overview of the wonderfully unique boutique accommodation in this incredible region.
For the Scrapbook
- Casa La Concha is a chic collection of five colourful cottages surrounded by lush, palm-filled gardens overlooking Marbella and the Mediterranean. Each cottage is uniquely decorated with vintage finds and interesting objets, they all have their own private patios and gardens, and all share a pool. This is an easy choice for families, and for extended families too, and it’s a special place to stay, with the sea views and surrounding gardens.
For the Views
- DDG Retreat in a seriously romantic hideaway in the hills just above the coastline with two luxurious suites and views to die for. Each room is individually designed and boasts private plunge pool and huge private terrace for enjoying the panoramic vistas.
- Balcón de Córdoba is a romantic, traditional-feeling hideaway in Cordoba, so well located that you can see some of the main sights from the roof terrace and private balconies of the ten rooms and suites. All of the rooms feature sandstone en suites which complement the muted tones in the traditional rooms, which have been freshened up with contemporary furnishings. The restaurant serves traditional dishes properly prepared using local produce.
- The Hotel V is a beautifully decorated hotel in Vejer de la Frontera, an atmospheric, historic, white hilltop town just south of Cádiz and overlooking the Straights of Gibraltar. The hotel has a roof terrace with incredible views of the plains, and all the way to Morocco on a clear day, and it has a hot tub. The 12 rooms and suites feature dark-wood Goan antiques and the villa’s original features, set against a bright contemporary backdrop.
For a City Break
- The Hotel Elvira Plaza is a well-positioned pick in the historic part of Seville, offering nine chic, whitewashed rooms, with rustic details and crisp, white linens. Most of the rooms have windows overlooking the tree-lined pedestrian street below, and you can see some of the tables spilling out from one of the hotel’s two restaurants.
- Las Casas Del Rey de Baeza is a chic hotel, occupying a grand, 18th century building in the heart of Seville. There are 41 rooms and suites, with elegant decor that blends the traditional tiles floors, huge windows and beamed ceilings with a contemporary colour palette and furnishings. There’s a small spa, and rooftop plunge pool. The restaurant specialises in Andalucían cuisine.
- Gar-Anat is a converted 17th century palace in a wonderfully central spot in historic Granada. Inside are 15 boutique-feeling rooms and suites, which make the most of unique original features like huge windows, tiled floors, beamed ceilings, original stone and columns, while still providing all the contemporary comforts, AND some super stylish design details. There’s no restaurant, but they offer a great traditional breakfast of cakes and tortilla, and you’re surrounded by restaurant choices.
For Gorgeous Design
- Seville’s Mercer Sevilla is an architecturally stunning conversion of a traditional mansion into a glamorous city hotel. Still arranged around a glorious central courtyard — turned atrium — the grand pillars and marble staircases now lead to 12 chic rooms, a cocktail bar and a romantic restaurant. The plunge pool is on the roof terrace and it’s stunning.
For a Countryside Escape
- Formerly an olive estate, so surrounded by mature olive groves, the Hacienda de San Rafael is a totally charming Andalucían country house escape. In addition to the colourful, 35 hectare garden setting, the hacienda will charm you with its original features and antiques, including paintings you’ll want to make up stories about. The courtyards are a haven with a pool; perfect for outdoor dining.
- The Casa Vina de Alcantara is a stylish, nine room hotel converted from a 19th century hunting lodge, built on the edge of the vineyard estate. With idyllic rural views and lush gardens surrounding the lodge, this is a peaceful, indulgent choice; both the pleasant courtyard and stylish sitting room and lounge are ideal places to try some of the fine, local sherries. They also have a butler service and an honesty bar, plus a swimming pool and lake.
- The Casa La Siesta is a farmhouse turned small luxury hotel. Set in acres of grounds, with incredible views, the guests who stay in these seven chic rooms, suites and apartments, are treated to a host of activities, from tennis and cooking classes to golf, yoga and art classes. Or you can just snooze by the pool...
For the Coast
- Casa de Las Cuatro Torres is a sensitively restored 17th century villa in the old town of Cádiz, now a charming 21 room hotel. Stay here and you can expect a warm welcome, sophisticated rooms decorated with antiques, Persian rugs, and original details, and a lovely homemade breakfast.
For the Sierra Nevada National Park
- La Almunia del Valle is a fantastic guesthouse in the hills of the Sierra Nevada National Park, offering perfect seclusion amongst spectacular views. There are just 11 rooms and suites, uniquely decorated in creamy shades, and boasting original features like fireplaces, exposed beams and stone floors. Our favourites have private terraces, but there are plenty of terraces to go round, including one with a pool, and one which the excellent restaurant spills out onto.
For Families
- The Palacio Bucarelli occupies a 17th century palace in Seville’s historic San Lorenzo neighbourhood, and offers 15 spacious rooms, suites and apartments, the largest with self-catering facilities. The interiors, with their huge windows and original details, have been painted white, and furnished with unique, but unfussy furniture. There’s no restaurant but they do offer breakfast, and there’s a courtyard with a pool, and a hot tub on the roof terrace. Family apartments can accommodate up to six easily.
For Romance
- Marbella’s Hotel Claude is a sophisticated pick, converted from a 17th century townhouse in the historic old town. There are just seven rooms and suites, and all are spacious, comfortable and feature different styles — some have a hint of Moorish taste, others more contemporary style — but all are beautiful. There’s a sunny patio and a roof terrace, and some rooms have their own balconies. The restaurant is quite gourmet. This is a romantic spot, but good for families with young children too, because they have cots, toys, and offer a babysitting service.
- Corral del Rey is a 13 room hotel, carefully converted from a 17th century mansion in the Alfalfa District of old Seville. The rooms are arranged around a pretty, internal courtyard, and have been individually designed to complement the unique spaces the mansion affords. There’s a chic restaurant too, a rooftop plunge pool, and they offer spa treatments.
For Foodies
- Molino del Arco is an 18th century olive mill overlooking olive groves and vineyards, which has been converted into a 19 room hotel just outside Ronda. The charming mix of original and traditional details, and stylish, spacious arrangement, leaves the building retaining the feeling of a farmhouse, but also that of a luxury country house hotel. The excellent restaurant sources almost everything locally, if not on site, and offers views while you dine. Even the pool has spectacular views.
For an Eco-Retreat
- The Finca La Donaira is a luxurious eco-retreat and organic farm, with nine private guest suites decorated simply with natural materials and traditional techniques — but also with high end design features and original art. The hotel has a series of pools, some fed by a natural spring, and they offer yoga and meditation sessions if you need to unwind.
For Great Value
- The Hotel Carabeo is a chic little spot overlooking the Mediterranean. There are just seven rooms and suites, styled decadently with antiques and cosy details — the suites have four-poster beds and private terraces. The pool overlooks the sea, as does the charming tapas bar and restaurant. Romantic, family friendly, and affordable.
- The Riad has been charmingly converted from a Moorish style, historic townhouse in Tarifa — the Moorish style makes sense when you consider it’s only 40 minutes on the ferry to Morocco. There are nine rooms and suites, all featuring original exposed stone walls, patterned tiled floors and antiques. Our favourites also feature private balconies and terraces. They offer a traditional breakfast, and you’re close to a host of welcoming tapas bars.
