Valbusenda Hotel

“Did you know that Spain has more grape vines than anywhere else in the world?” Our Gurus told us, “you can pretty much stick a pin in the map of Spain and not be far from a vineyard.” Pick any region and you’ll find vines growing, even the Canary Islands. Naturally some regions stand out more than others: Galicia, for Rias Baixas and Albarino wines; Catalonia, south of Barcelona, noted for Cava and Priorat; Andalucia for sherry; and, perhaps most famously, Rioja for its eponymous, full-bodied wines. And these centres of wine production are where the majority of recommendations for the best wine hotels in Spain will be found. Our selection includes architectural masterpieces, wine resorts, converted castles and much more — there's definitely something here for every taste and budget!

For the Album

Hotel de Marques Riscal

  • The Hotel Marques de Riscal is quite something: occupying a metallic wave of a building by Frank Gehry (which looks like the remnants of ideas, and materials, used for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao), and surrounded by its own vineyards in La Rioja. It’s fabulous, and extremely memorable, with 61 rooms and suites almost as cool as the exterior, with Scandi minimalism and windows that follow the shape of the roof’s waves. The spa and restaurant are cool too: the former employs all sorts of wine therapies, and the latter has a Michelin star, but there’s also a bistro and sun terrace for casual dining. The views are incredible too.

For the Views

Eduren Ugarte

  • Eguren Ugarte is a beautifully refined contemporary hotels set on a winery in La Rioja. In addition to 21 simple and stylish bedrooms, there’s a relaxed lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, two gourmet restaurants — one serving traditional Spanish cuisine, and one creating gastronomic wine-friendly menus — and a lookout tower offering stunning views across the vineyard to the Cantabria Mountains. In fact wonderful views are wherever you look here, from private balconies, both the restaurant and the terrace, as well as the tower. A complimentary winery tour of the estate comes with every booking.

For the Vineyard Experience

Can Bonastre Wine Resort

  • Set amidst a 250-acre vineyard, and surrounded by spectacular Catalonian scenery, the Can Bonastre Wine Resort produces over a dozen different wines each season, so it represents form and function. It has just 12 rooms and suites, simply and stylishly decorated, plus a gourmet restaurant and luxurious spa. And it’s all powered by solar power!

For Foodies

Hacienda Zorita

  • Occupying a beautiful, 700 year old monastery just outside Salamanca, the Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel & Spa benefits from a spectacular position overlooking the River Tormes and surrounding vineyards. There are 40 rooms and suites, still a little monastic in style, but there’s plenty of luxury on offer, from the multiple secluded swimming pools in the lush gardens, to the vast cellar, the outdoor cinema, and the delicious food, which you can arrange to have served to you in various spots on the grounds. The wines produced on the estate are fantastic, and the chef has a Michelin star.
  • La Boella is a 12th century, 110 hectare estate between Tarragona and Reus, which is still a working vineyard AND an olive oil producer, in addition to its elegant villa being a 13 room hotel. The rooms are divided between two buildings, the historic villa and a more contemporary building, and the room decor reflects this. They offer wine tasting and gastronomic tours of the region, and there’s a fine dining restaurant onsite. There’s also a luxurious looking pool and collection of lush and private courtyards.

For Sunshine

Hotel Peralada

  • The Hotel Peralada is a large elegant hotel on the Costa Brava, surrounded by its own golf course and vineyards. The 62 rooms and suites are decorated with contemporary style and simplicity, with plenty of natural materials, paint and linens the colour of stone, and tasteful black and white photographs. The spa is indulgent, and uses wine in many of the treatments, and the hotel hosts numerous tasting events. The restaurant is another highlight.

For Romantics

Castillo el Collado

  • With nine vineyards within striking distance, Castillo el Collado, near Laguardia, is perfectly placed for sampling Rioja’s wines. It looks like a fairytale castle, with ten gloriously decorated rooms, complete with panelling, exposed stone walls, canopied beds, oil paintings, and solid, dark-wood antiques. It also has a pool set amid manicured gardens, with a terrace for relaxing with a glass of something new to savour. The restaurant serves authentic Basque food, and there’s a tavern offering smaller plates.
  • Just 10 minutes from Galicia's west coast, yet surrounded by quiet countryside, Quinta de San Amaro offers chic, rather quirkily decorated rooms; a glass-walled dining room serving up award-winning Galician food; a cosy library; fragrant gardens and orchards; and an outdoor pool with restful valley views. The hotel can also arrange wine tours.

For a Rural Retreat

Casa Vina de Alcantara

  • Casa Vina de Alcantara, outside Jerez, is deep in the heart of sherry country. Surrounded by vineyards, this 19th century hunting lodge is owned by a family with links to the Gonzales-Byass sherry clan. Its nine rooms are large and elegantly furnished, with the odd mural and beamed ceiling, and spacious, contemporary bathrooms. Outside is a shady garden with a pool and lake, and there are plenty of places, both inside and outside, that are perfect for a quick sherry and a sit down — there’s also butler service and an honesty bar.
  • The Finca de Los Arandinos is a beautifully designed contemporary hotel set amongst vineyards and olive groves. The chic, functional decor make way for the views over the surrounding Rioja countryside — through floor-to-ceiling windows, and from private balconies. The finca has 14 rooms and suites, plus a lovey spa — which also has excellent views, and an impressive restaurant known for its local cuisine and in-house wine pairings.

For Relaxation

Hespederia de los Parajes

  • Hespederia de los Parajes is an historic wine estate in Rioja, close to Laguardia, converted into a stylish, 18 room wine hotel, complete with a spa that offers to apply wine to your body in one of its treatments. Rooms and suites are decorated with a charming mix of old and new, with plenty of original features and all the mod. cons., including whirlpool tubs, in some cases. There are two restaurants, one more formal than the other, both serving authentic local cuisine.
  • The Gran Hotel Nagari is in Vigo, right up against the Galician coastline, with tranquil bay views. It’s a good choice if you want to combine your vineyard tours with some pampering, because it’s a spa hotel, with an award-winning spa, and a cool rooftop pool. Affordable and romantic, these 62 rooms and suites are decorated in a contemporary style, with plenty of white, and comfortable, luxurious details.
  • The Valbusenda Hotel Bodega & Spa is a superbly luxurious five star hotel, beautifully designed to make the most of vineyard rows in Vega de Toro. There are vast windows in all the rooms, even in the spa, which is extensive. The decor is chicly contemporary, like the architecture, and the art, and the rooftop pool offers panoramic vineyard views.

For a Countryside Escape

Pago di Cirsus

  • Pago di Cirsus is a gracious country house turned hotel, surrounded by its own vineyards in sunny Navarre. This is much more grand old pile than converted farmhouse, with an incredible marble lobby and opulent decor in the public spaces, and in the 12 rooms and suites. The restaurant serves Basque-Navarra cuisine of a delicious standard, accompanied by local wines, including the six varieties grown on this estate. There's also a roof terrace with vineyard views, and beautiful gardens and courtyards.
  • Mas de Baix is a charming little hotel converted from a terracotta-coloured Catalan farmhouse. With just nine rooms, this is an intimate spot, and its cosy lounge is welcoming. There’s also a fragrant garden with a pool area and terrace. The decor is simple but stylish, and the atmosphere is relaxed. There’s no restaurant, but breakfast is provided.

For a Food and Wine City Break

Hospes Amerigo

  • The Hospes Amérigo is a chic hotel in the historic part of Alicante, with a Michelin-starred restaurant named after the region’s famous grape: Monastrell. Its 55 rooms and suites are decorated in contemporary white, but make the most of the wonderfully shaped windows — a legacy from the building’s origins as a 16th century convent. You can see the cathedral, and the Santa Barbara Castle from some of the rooms, and from the pool, spa and bar on the roof terrace, and you’re only 300 metres from the beach.
  • The Hotel Villa Jerez is in the heart of Jerez, but certainly doesn’t feel like it, the vibe is much more countryside retreat. Its 14 classically decorated rooms and suites are flooded with natural light, and dressed in pale colours to make the most of it. There are lovely gardens, with a pool, and a stylish restaurant that spills out onto a charming terrace.

For Families

Castillo del Buen Armor

  • Castillo del Buen Amor is a beautiful castle, to the north of Salamanca, complete with towers and battlements, a gatehouse, cellars and turret rooms. Its eight rooms and suites are spacious and romantically decorated, with antiques and art, and there are a couple of family-sized suites. The restaurant serves traditional local cuisine, and they offer regular wine tastings too (they create a range of wines from their own harvest). Outside the castle walls are stunning grounds, including their seven hectares of vineyards, and a pool!
