For a Rural Retreat

The Farmhouse at Veritas is perfectly positioned amidst gently undulating vineyards just south of Afton, with views all the way to the mountains. The Farmhouse has eight rooms in all, six in the main house and then two separate cottages, which are ideal for families. Decor is farmhouse fresh, with lots of white, and antiques that suit the property perfectly, without feeling over fussy. The farm-to-fork restaurant is excellent, but the cottages have self catering facilities too.

To be in Amongst the Vines

With 300 acres of its own land, Wedmore Place is a huge country estate, complete with an award-winning winery and a 28 room hotel on the outskirts of Williamsburg. Individually decorated, the rooms feature antiques and big beds, and a range of styles from opulent to rustic. Guests are offered a complimentary tasting from the vineyard, and also have access to a pool and tennis courts. There are two dining options on site; the friendly, culinarily adventurous tavern, and the romantic cafe.
Arcady Vineyard B&B is the only accommodation in Charlottesville set on a working vineyard, and these five rooms and suites are surrounded by acres of peaceful, verdant countryside. Each of the rooms is different, but they’re all spacious, and light — with their own terrace and wine fridge. The more romantic have four-poster beds and private spa baths on their terraces. Rather charmingly they offer an evening turn-down service which includes a glass of dessert wine.

For Foodies

The 1804 Inn at Barboursville Vineyards has almost all the information you need in the name. What’s missing is that it’s a highly acclaimed winery, that there are ten rooms in the inn, and that they have a superb fine dining restaurant. There are also beautiful rural views, and elegant details. Expect peace, romantic details, and a serious treat when it comes to the food and wine.

For an Intimate Escape

Mayhurst Inn is a totally charming white board mansion set on 36 lush acres in the heart of Orange. Inside it has been beautifully converted into an eight room inn, complete with period wallpapers, dark-wood antiques, original marble fireplaces, and beautiful rugs. The bathrooms are all new, of course, with double whirlpool tubs in several. There’s also a veranda and patio. Breakfast is provided, and there are numerous really excellent restaurants in the surrounding area, and over 17 wineries to choose from!
Foster Harris House is a charming historic home turned five room B&B, set on a large piece of land. The decor is elegant and traditional, with just the right sort of grandness for a grand farmhouse: think wood-burning stoves, large windows, antiques and original art. The garden feels like the perfect spot for a glass of something of an an early evening, and the views are wonderful. There are plenty of wineries close by for tours and tastings.

For a Spa Break

The Salamander Resort & Spa is a grand country house affair on 340 acres of Virginia’s prime horse and wine country, and it’s definitely the sort of resort you don’t need to leave. The spa is huge, with pools, saunas and steam rooms, and cutting edge spa treatments, and there are another couple of outdoor pools as well. There’s also a gym and a library, a stable of horses, hotel bikes, and even hotel shops. The restaurant offers locally a sourced fine dining menu, and the bar is stylish. Add to that 168 rooms and suites dressed up as if they’re part of a traditional mansion. The Gold Cup Wine Bar offers tastings of wines from local vintners.

Charming Inns

The Oaks Victorian Inn is a gorgeous Victorian, wood-clad mansion, turned six room inn in Christiansburg, packed with period details. There’s a wrap-around porch complete with rocking chairs, a dining room complete with fireplace, and romantic rooms complete with four-poster beds. The owners are charming and helpful, and you’re surrounded by great places to eat and great vineries to visit.
The Inn at Little Washington is a patriotically decorated mansion at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with 24 traditionally luxurious rooms and suites, and a popular restaurant with an ever-changing menu and an award-winning wine list. Expect tapestries, four-poster beds, huge artworks, antlers and views.

For Families

The Boar's Head Resort sits on a 573 acre estate, complete with a soothing spa, swimming pools, tennis and squash courts, hotel bikes, and plenty of space for active folk and families. And you’re right next to a golf course with Blue Ridge Mountain views. Inside the Boar’s Head has 175 rooms and suites, and there’s a configuration to suit every family or group, plus three restaurants. The location, just outside Charlottesville, is great for winery tours and site seeing too.

For Great Value

Charlottesville’s The Draftsman sounds like an old inn, but it’s a new purpose-built tower, in a contemporary style. Within are 185 rooms and suites, decorated with a slightly industrial edge, but luxurious fabrics and colours. There’s also a state-of-the-art gym, and a farm-to-fork restaurant that reflects the region’s farming and viticulture heritage. The public areas are welcoming and comfortable, with plants, art, and artfully mismatched furniture.
The Hope and Glory Inn is a collection of quaint cottages and rooms set on a picturesque patch of vineyard in Irvington. There are just 12 room options in all, some have fireplaces, some terraces, and all have chintz fabrics and homely details. The cottages are ideal for families. The restaurant has a rustic feel, and serves great local produce.

Best B&BS

The Airwell Bed and Breakfast occupies an historic, Greek-revival home in little Airmont, in the heart of wine country. It has just four rooms, and they’re all uniquely charming, with antiques and traditional-style plush soft furnishings; the bathrooms are more contemporary additions, and have rain showers and all the mod. cons.. The house is set in a beautiful, five acre mature garden, and has a charming porch and verandahs overlooking it.
Rockwood Manor is just outside pretty Dublin, which is the perfect spot for accessing a number of Virginia’s wineries. It’s an antiques and chintz manor house, with just eight guest rooms, all individually decorated as if you’re guests of a family, not just a hotel, and the famous Southern hospitality reinforces that. While all of the rooms are charming, with fireplaces, large sash windows and hardwood floors, our Guru prefers those with jetted tubs. There’s no restaurant, but they offer breakfast.
Hopkins Ordinary is an intimate retreat, close to Shenandoah National Park, with the quirky bonus of having its own craft ale brewery. There are six rooms in the main house plus a separate cottage, and all are decorated in what one could term traditional minimalism — antiques, but used sparingly and stylishly. Hopkins Ordinary is in Sperryville, which has a number of award-winning wineries, and numerous places to eat and drink. They offer breakfast, but only the cottage has self catering facilities.
