Between Lisbon’s party hubs Chiado and Bairro Alto, 9Hotel Mercy offers a slice of calm on one of Lisbon’s more hectic streets, near tourist spots Luís de Camões Square and São Roque Church. Dark, sensual rooms in black, grey and gold colourways start at Classic and move up to luxurious Suites, the latter a good pick for romantic celebrations. A cool feature is the rooftop Terrace Bar, a lovely spot to catch a sunset with panoramic views of the sparkling Tagus River and São Jorge Castle. The breakfast buffet is a highlight, featuring local Portuguese delicacies; bleisure travellers open their laptops after the day’s first pastel de nata and ‘bica’ coffee, in the dedicated coworking space. A must-visit is gourmet Mexican joint Carnal, namely for a ‘Carnalita’, mixing Volcan Blanco, lemon verbena, Giffard agave, and orange - a great place to start a night out that’ll likely stretch into the early hours. There’s no gym in which to shake off the cobwebs, but walking Lisbon’s seven hills will be all the exercise you need.
