Hotel Review
Hidden away down an alleyway behind a large door in Essaouira's fishing quarter is Dar Lazuli. The house is 200 years old with original Berber features such as the entrance into the 3-sided courtyard which is so low you have to bend double to pass through. It feels very much like an intimate seaside villa. Three characterful self-contained apartments of different configurations (two with mezzanines) share a similar theme of kitchenette, tadelakt bathrooms, seating area inside and out and super-wide, sublimely comfortable beds. This is a major plus. A blue painted stairway leads to an open communal hangout and up to a bijou roof terrace overlooking the port., Rachid, the softly spoken manager and his lovely wife Latifa ensure your needs are catered for during your stay. Latifa is a wonderfully inspired cook preparing delicious suppers on demand. Fresh orange juice and pancakes are served for breakfast.

Why do people love staying in your hotel?
People who enjoy their stay in dar Lazuli generally are young professionals who appreciate the location. Located in the medina very close to shops and restaurants, dar Lazuli is not far from the beach and the harbour. They can also practice various sport activities, such as running, horse riding or various types of surfing. They also appreciate that, although very centrally located, it remains a quiet place to stay as well as the decoration of the house made by a UK professional designer. Finally, a vast majority of our customers who post comments acknowledges the central contribution of Rachid and Latifa who running the house.
What is there to do in the area?
In addition to the sport activities already mentioned above, there is a large golf course in Diabat (20 minutes from Essaouira by car). People can also visit the souks in the medina and walk for hours along the beach in direction of Cap Sim. Every week days, they are local souks in the countryside that are very impressive where farmers from all villages around are selling all kinds of domestic animals and agricultural materials (please ask Rachid for more information).
What kind of breakfast do you offer?
A Continental style breakfast is offered, including Moroccan pancakes and French bread with butter, honey, orange juice, tea and coffee.
Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
On demand, we can offer a typical Moroccan meal, including a Moroccan salad, a tagine (fish, kip or vegetarian) and a fruit salad at the price of 170 dirhams, including a bottle of Moroccan wine.
Inside the medina, we would recommend:
Il Mare: very nice location above the median walls and in front of the Atlantic. Mostly for fish and seafood.
La Licorne: one of the best couscous inside the medina.
Caravan Café: a good restaurant with live music and attractions
La petite Perle: very close to the dar Lazuli, good quality/price ratio, without wine.
Le Ramsès, 18, rue Ibn Roched, Essaouira.
Outside the medina:
Le Dar Caravan: very good restaurant in a beautiful garden and close to the beach of Diabat, with a swimming pool:
Which are your most popular room types, and why?
None of our rooms is more popular than the others as each correspond to a specific type of customer. Alizée suits for a family with no more than two children. Calima is our largest apartment with an open wood fire. Ghibli is smaller but more intimate with an open wood fire too.
What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ?
One of our apartment, Alizée, particularly suits to families with a mezzanine that can accommodate two kids in addition to the parents on the first floor. Dar Lazuli has two cots for babies.
What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers?
With its internal patio, dar Lazuli is an intimate house although located in the center of the Essaouira medina. Its design can be characterized by simplicity and comfort. It has three level terraces and also three open wood fires very convenient during cold winter evenings. Thanks to Rachid and Latifa, customers feel as they are at home...away from their home.
