This ultra hip, ocean-facing design hotel on Ipanema Beach was conceived in its entirety by Philippe Starck in 2006 using a sophisticated mix of ‘50s and ‘60s style furniture and vintage uniforms to reflect Ipanema’s Bossa Nova era. Friendly staff await guests at a giant six foot long tree trunk in the intelligently designed lobby. Warm earthy tones, from international artifacts, hardwood flooring and white marble from Greece combine to create a cool, minimalist ambience. With prices to match (wi-fi extra), this is one of Rio’s most impressive and illustrious hotels. The suites are generously sized, with beds placed to maximize the beach view, and the rooftop pool and bar have stunning views. The hotel’s Al Mare restaurant serves some of the best seafood in the city under the aegis of celebrated Italian chef Luca Gozzani. For cool sophisticats.

"If the hotel's understated luxury isn’t reason enough to justify the price tag, then its prime location will."
Originally published by The Telegraph
"Designed by Philippe Starck, rooms marry form and function, with warm woods, earth-tone colors, splashes of sunny yellow on the bed throws, and worn-in leather chairs by Brazilian designer Sergio Rodregues on their spacious sea-view decks."

"The Philippe Starck-designed hotel still retains an aura of exclusivity, especially from its bossa nova-chic lobby and sexy rooftop pool."
