Hotel review

The steepish walk up multiple steps to Hotel Hydra is a small price to pay for painterly sunset views and a bird's eye view of terracotta roofs and harbour comings and goings. To make things easier, they'll meet you off the boat with a friendly donkey to carry your bags. When you reach this renovated mansion, expect to find rooms (some with kitchenettes) that depart from Hydra's nostalgic taste for plush, gilt and faux-antique furniture. Instead, you'll find stylish simplicity - cool whites and greys, tall windows with gauzy drapes, and trimmings including Apivita toiletries and Cocomat natural-fibre bedding. If you've chosen a room with a balcony, you'll probably want to order room service breakfast (yoghurt, honey, juices, fruit and fresh bakeries). If not, you can start the day with fellow guests on the lovely terrace. For lunch and dinner, Hydra's harbourside restaurants are temptingly close.
