It’s hard to believe this country-house-style hotel next to a wooded ravine is only a 10-minute drive from the city centre. The grand Arts and Crafts building - once the home of a prominent Victorian industrialist – was designed for entertaining and its original wood panelling, inglenook fireplaces and polished floorboards have been skilfully blended with modern Italian furniture, rich-coloured upholstery and contemporary art. A collection of cartoons and wire-sculpture dogs give the feel of a relaxed, idiosyncratic country house. Bedrooms are quietly elegant with softly striped carpets, clean-lined furniture, feature wallpapers and muted shades jazzed up with shots of copper, sea-green or plum-red. Thick curtains and velvet armchairs add texture while pot-plants and glossy magazines add inviting touches. All are different in shape; some have bay windows or window-seats, a few have terraces. While afternoon tea is one of the star turns, save room for dinner; the cooking is assured and modern without being fussy, and the set menu better value than the a la carte. A city hotel with the peace and views of a country-house hotel.

Deluxe rooms are quite popular as they are spacious and most with beautiful views of the gardens, located in the original building. Our junior suites are also very popular as they are in the New House and very spacious. What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? Yes, some of our rooms can hold cots and extra beds for 12 and under. We have two junior suites with sofa beds, for adults. We are located in the Dene – which has multiple walking paths to explore as well as Pet’s Corner.
