Away from Mauritius’ pristine, turquoise-water beaches, Lakaz Chamarel sits surrounded by the Black River Gorges National Park in the mountainous south-west of the island. Inland, though by no means removed from the ocean – sea-view rooms and a shuttle to the beach act as a reminder of its island position – this ecolodge is set in lush tropical gardens. Scattered lodges throughout the grounds act as rooms at this Mauritian-owned guesthouse-cum-luxury hotel, with a choice of individually-designed bedrooms and suites; all have the magnificent extra of an open-air shower – ideal for a spot of star-gazing in the light pollution-free skies. Wake to leisurely breakfasts, complete with fresh fruit, excellent coffee and home-made breads and jams, whilst at lunch and dinner, the restaurant is more traditional with a variety of Mauritian dishes – or there are lots of local village restaurants to try. Admire both the colourful flora and exotic birdsong on nature walks or explore further afield on one of the ecolodge’s bicycles; in addition to this an array of activities can be arranged, from fishing and golf to kite-surfing and yoga classes. Back at the hotel, relax in or around the swimming pools which are decked out with sun loungers, hammocks and shady thatched pergolas, or treat yourself to a massage.
