On the western end of Porquerolles is Le Mas du Langoustier, a delightful hotel set amidst lush botanical gardens. Buildings are terracotta-coloured with sky blue shutters, while the antique-filled interiors are typically French. Smaller bedrooms have floral wallpaper while larger rooms and suites are spacious, many with balconies. Sandy tracks lead to a small beach with sun loungers on wooden decking, while nearby public beaches provide sheltered swimming in varying conditions. An hourly shuttle takes guests to the village and port, while hotel facilities include tennis courts, a swimming pool and beauty treatments. There are two restaurants (one is Michelin-starred), with eager sommeliers poised to serve wines from the island. After a dinner packed with Mediterranean flavours, return to the bedroom to find the following day’s weather forecast on your turned down bed.

If there’s a lovelier place to dine than on the terrace of the Mas, well, I’d like to hear about it. The Olivier Restaurant is the one that has bagged a Michelin star for its inventive take on Mediterranean cooking. Menus start at €65.
