Those looking for an ideal base for a spell of wine-tasting and gastronomy need look no further, and Mas Latour Lavail is equally well-located for sightseeing in Perpignan. Mediterranean beaches are 20 minutes away, but guests may find it hard to leave the arty, dark-tiled pool. Hemmed in by vineyards, the two storey building is in the brick and boulder style typical of the region. Cypresses and oleander stand guard outside, and roof-high glass doors lead to a vast, brick-vaulted ground floor lounge. Five rooms (including two suites, each with a private terrace) are on an upper mezzanine floor where ceilings have been removed and huge skylights installed to create a bright and airy feel. Rooms are spotless and airy, with king-sized beds dressed in pure white linen, walk-in rain showers supplied with fluffy robes and designer toiletries. Polished wood and exposed masonry provide the setting. Breakfast (the only meal) is served by the pool in fine weather. There is no full-service bar, but a fridge in the lounge is stocked with complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks. You can also buy wine (modestly as well as extravagantly priced) by the glass or bottle.

Lionel Lavail, director of the Maison Cazes winery in Rivesaltes, has turned this 16th-century farmhouse into a haven that makes a perfect base for a gastronomic visit, sightseeing, or simply chilling by the pool.
