A luxury guest house in a historic harbourside building, elegantly styled and with a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. Out of the main centre, but close to a water-taxi stop. A conversion of a handsome, 19th-century customs office, on the south side of the Nieuwe Maas river, this is more discreet luxury hotel than guest house. High-ceilinged rooms are stylishly furnished with a mix of vintage and contemporary pieces: Chesterfields and velvet-upholstered chairs in the snug bar (once the clerks' office); Philippe Starck chairs in the airy breakfast room. Uncluttered bedrooms are quietly elegant, often with a witty recycled touch - a mirror made out of an old door or a desk of recycled timber. All have high-tech music systems, interesting bathrooms - perhaps a steam cabinet or beamed ceiling - and watery views, whether of river or harbour. Breakfast is simple but good with organic meats and cheeses, and eggs how you want. There's an all-day snacks menu - when it's warm, served on the harbourside terrace - plus charcuterie and cheese boards in the evening. Although a good 30-minute walk to the main sites, there's a water-taxi stop across the road, plus it's only 15 minutes to the hip Katendrecht district.
