Set in a quiet, upmarket part of Lutyens’ Delhi, The Claridges is a lovely haven in this frenetic city. It’s been welcoming guests for decades now (since 1955) and it’s easy to see why people come back time and again, and why it’s recommended by so many of those in the know.

Interiors are classic in style, with plenty of striking features including attractive murals, deep leather sofas and wood panelling. The rooms and suites are equally good: super spacious and with a traditional style that delivers both in terms of design and comfort. Some boast a terrace or balcony others a view of the gardens or pool. All with big comfy beds and excellent bathrooms.

There are numerous restaurants to choose from here. And whilst many a buffet restaurant is very average, the one here, The Halcyon, is a cut above — delicious food and helpful friendly staff to offer advice if you need it. Other options include Chinese, Thai and some seriously mouth-watering pastries from the onsite bakery. The spa is staffed by yet more friendly and helpful therapists, there’s a lovely outdoor pool which is bliss after a day’s busy sightseeing, and there’s a charming garden out front, which transforms itself into an atmospheric dining experience come evening.

For an understated luxury stay that delivers on many levels, with a welcoming feel and armies of well-trained staff, The Claridges is most definitely the one to book!
