Marrakech has seen an explosion of accommodation options over the past ten years, but no expense has been spared by the Oberoi group to make this one of the finest. Architecturally, the hotel merges traditional Moroccan and Andalusian styles, with a nod to the Alhambra, and with its 28 acres of olive groves and citrus orchards, it offers a tranquil haven from the bustle and noise of the Medina, with spectacular views of the Atlas Mountains on all but the haziest days. The space for guests to enjoy, both inside and out, is very generous. Even at full capacity, you feel as if you have acres to kick back in - a very different vibe from the cheek-by-jowl city centre hotels.
The rooms, from suites to villas, are smart, cool and well proportioned, decorated in muted colours, each with a signature free-standing bath tub with views over the grounds or private gardens. These are extensive, boasting a 2000 sqm spa with indoor pool, a large outdoor pool and poolside restaurant, and shaded walkways through the trees. In addition, 76 of the 84 accommodations, all villas, come witrh their own private pool and garden.
At the heart of the property are two stunning architectural features: the grand internal courtyard, inspired by one of Marrakech's most beautiful architectural treasures, the 14th century Ben Youssef Medersa, which comes alive in the evenings with music and pre-dinner cocktails; and the mesmerising 'Grand Canal', a carefully planned stretch of water which provides a stunning vista as you contemplate the distant Atlas Mountains. Overall, the effect is meditative, offering the lucky guest a calming oasis in beautiful surroundings.
For dining, the Oberoi offers three restaurants - the Indian-inspired Rivayat under the direction of a Michelin-starred chef, the poolside Azur, and the Moroccan/Mediterranean Tamint, serving wonderfully inventive dishes with stunning views of the gardens, canal and mountains from its terrace.
Finally, the hotel makes a great base for local adventuring - from hot air ballooning to Atlas treks and sunset safaris and BBQs.
