One half of the island nation of St Kitts and Nevis, lush St Kitts boasts jungle-clad mountains, beautiful beaches and turquoise seas, as well as a lively port city. Now a popular cruise ship destination, this friendly part of the Lesser Antilles has a turbulent history and a fascinating culture — both well worth discovering during your trip. Accommodation options range from simple beach hotels to gorgeous heritage hideaways in the hills, fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. The best places to stay in St Kitts are well-suited to couples, families and groups of friends eager to soak up the many wonders of the island.
Basseterre, St Kitts’ bustling capital, is a hub of commercial activity and tourism. This is where the cruise ships dock, where buses blast soca music from their speakers in traffic, and where markets thrum with farmers and fishermen hawking fresh produce from across the island. You’ll notice Victorian architecture as well as French influences — St Kitts was the first West Indian Island to be colonised by Europeans. The St Kitts Scenic Railway departs from the south, and is a wonderful way to see the island as a family.
Venture north to explore Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a 17th-century, British-built military structure which is now a UNESCO heritage site. Expect superb views and scenic walking trails, as well as plenty of history. Head to Wingfield Estate and Romney Manor for an insight into the indigo, tobacco and sugar industry — rum has been produced on the site since at least 1681, making it the oldest intact distillery in the Caribbean.
Spend your days hiking and cycling in St Kitts’ leafy interior, or sunbathe on lovely beaches after sailing, snorkelling and boating expeditions.
Don't forget that the best places to stay in St Kitts get very busy during the peak Christmas and New Year season; so book well ahead to avoid disappointment!
