About Castres

East of Toulouse, Castres is a welcoming riverside town in the Tarn with a number of historic buildings, buzzy cafés and eateries, and a laid-back feel. Culture aficionados and on-foot explorers will appreciate discovering the town’s attractions, whilst more outdoorsy types can hike and cycle in the surrounding countryside. Book a private villa or a restful country retreat: the best places to stay in Castres are tranquil and historic, perfect for a restful holiday as a couple or with family and friends.

The River Agout runs through the heart of the old town, and the pretty waterfront homes — once part of tanneries and cloth-dyeing workshops — which line its banks are one of the Castres’ most-photographed sights. Stroll across old bridges, amble into the Eglise Saint-Benoit, the Eglise Notre Dame de la Plate, or the beautiful Bishop’s Palace, with its striking gardens. Pedestrianised Place Jean Jaures is the place to go for good shopping, whilst culture buffs will enjoy the Goya Museum and the Jean-Jaures Museum.

Beyond the town, Gourjade Park is a superb spot for a picnic, whilst the enormous granite plateau of Le Sidobre — the largest in Europe — invites hiking, mountain biking and horse riding excursions. You’ll find the best places to stay in Castres well-located for leisurely days in town as well as more nature-focused adventures.
