About Douarnenez

Believed in French folklore to be the site of the mythical city of Ys’ vanishing into the sea, Douarnenez is a welcoming seaside community in a striking part of western Brittany. Popular with keen sailors and foodies, the area is brilliant for a gastronomic holiday or an outdoorsy escape, with a good selection of simple cottages and cool contemporary hotels to choose from. Book a room at one of the best places to stay in Douarnenez and begin your immersion into Breton life!

Once a bustling fishing town with quaint houses traditionally inhabited by local fisherfolk, Douarnenez has a rich maritime heritage. Follow the Sardine Route — a guided tour of the town — for an insight into the past, or try your hand at fishing before picking a perch at one of the many relaxed seafood eateries which line the waterfront. Spend your days soaking up the sunshine at the beach, exploring old chapels and covered markets, or kayaking and sailing on Douarnenez Bay. At low tide, you’ll be able to walk out to Tristan Island — named for its association with the tale of Tristan and Iseult — to see the lighthouse, orchard and art gallery.

The area’s peaceful and idyllic vibe is reflected in the best places to stay in Douarnenez, our favourite of which has a terrific organic restaurant, soothing spa and superb sea views.
