About Gard

Part of southern France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region, the Gard department is surprisingly under-explored, given its fascinating history and wealth of natural beauty. From the salt marshes of the Camargue to the high green hills and valleys of the north-west, dotted with fortified towns and villages, the Gard brims with appealing and intriguing destinations. Accommodoation options tend to be small — sometimes owner-run — and historic, with beautiful converted farmhouses and townhouses aplenty. Fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets, our pick of the best places to stay in the Gard promise a magical French escape.

Nîmes, the region’s hub, is spellbinding. Expect Roman sites — including the imposing Pont du Gard — as well as excellent museums and foodie hotspots. History buffs will also adore artsy Uzès, with its Renaissance façades and open-air markets, and the ancient walled city of Aigues Mortes. Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres and Sommières are also superb. Look to the Gard River for kayaking, fishing and sailing, venture to the Camargue — perhaps staying in Porte Camargue — for salt marshes, beaches and the flamingo-filled National Park, or go hiking and horse riding in the craggy Cévennes Mountains.

Alternatively, while away your days poolside, tuck into terrific fare crafted from top-notch local produce, or enjoy rejuvenating wellness treatments at some of the best places to stay in the Gard.

The Best Places to Stay in the Gard

FOR Romance

  • Après la Sieste offers six bedrooms with exposed stone walls and arched doorways. Perfect for quiet couples, friends or solo travellers, this little B&B bolthole has a standout swimming pool, minimalist modern interiors and flower-filled gardens. Intimate and tranquil, yet well-located for exploring Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres' medieval centre on foot.
  • Bien Loin d'Içi is a charming spot just north of Nîmes. The three double bedrooms have contemporary interiors and private terraces with hot tubs. Enjoy big breakfasts before hopping on the B&B's bicycles to explore, or unwinding in the swimming pool surrounded by wildflowers. An intimate rural idyll for couples.
  • Hotel Des Remparts is a beautiful family-run boutique property, fusing chic design with period features, including impressive exposed-stone walls. A charming, romantic choice, with a lively bar and indulgent spa in Aigues Mortes.
  • Les Sardines aux Yeux Bleus has three apartments and three bedrooms, which share access to a courtyard swimming pool. Hide away in relaxed, rustic bliss with quirky, characterful decor and easy access to Uzès, Nîmes and Avignon. Laid-back and romantic.
  • La Maison de Léonie has modern and minimalistic interiors, with exposed stone walls and pops of primary colours, in a restored farmhouse. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, a wellness centre and a hot tub. Expect big breakfasts, and table d'hôtes dinners upon request. Especially lovely for couples.

FOR FAMILIES OR GROUPS

  • L’Oustau Camarguen is a welcoming hotel with spacious, contemporary rooms, a big swimming pool and appealingly affordable pricing. Brilliant for families or groups, it's a fun, relaxed spot to unwind — or to use as a base for exploring Port Camargue and the surrounding region.
  • Villa Mazarin is an elegant 15th century escape with traditional Provençal interiors, a small spa and a gourmet French restaurant. The beach is a short drive away, whilst the hotel is well-located for explorations of historic Aigues Mortes. Children will love the covered swimming pool, board games and gardens.
  • L'Enclos des Lauriers Roses is fantastic for families or groups of friends. Set amidst vineyards, fruit orchards and olive trees and spread across the village of Cabrières, the hotel has bright, airy bedrooms with mezzanines and space for extra beds. Facilities include four swimming pools and a great restaurant with an excellent wine list. Superb and sociable.
  • Domaine des Clos offers characterful rooms, studios and self-catering apartments in a converted 18th-century Provençal mas. Set 25kms outside Nîmes, it's a relaxed rural spot for couples, friends or families eager to enjoy yoga classes, strolling around 4 hectares of gardens, dips in the pool and restorative massages. Table d'hôtes dinners are a real treat for larger groups.

FOR A RURAL ESCAPE

  • Mas de la Rivoire is an attractive former winery with five rooms and five gîtes just outside Sommières. Pared-back interiors feature cosy beds in rooms with contemporary artwork, exposed stone walls and vaulted ceilings. There's space for families and groups as well as couples. Spend your days at the swimming pool, gym, volleyball field, playing ping pong, horse riding or strolling through the gardens.
  • Monte Arena offers a gorgeous country escape north-west of Uzès. Unwind in chic, spacious rooms with vaulted ceilings and leafy garden views, take a dip in the plunge pool or enjoy breakfast al fresco. One for art lovers and romantics. Delicious dinners can be arranged on request.
  • Château d'Arpaillargues is a whimsical historic residence set in mature gardens outside Uzès. Pick this place for the fantastic restaurant, the range of activities — pool, bikes for hire, tennis court and boules lawn — as well as the airy, high-ceilinged interiors. Rural bliss for couples or families.

FOR Foodies

  • Le Mas de Boudan is a Provençal farmhouse with four contemporary rooms above a Michelin-starred restaurant. Led by Chef Jérôme Nutile, the restaurant prides itself on its creative haute cuisine, featuring seasonal ingredients including Camargues oysters, fish from Le-Grau-Du-Roi served in a saffron broth, or mustard-rubbed lamb chops. You'll find an impressive wine cellar and dedicated cheese room, too.
  • L'Artemise is a gastronomic restaurant with five contemporary rooms on a hillside near Uzès. Expect commanding views of the countryside, an elegant spa, verdant gardens and an impressive art collection. The restaurant's daily-changing menu reflects top seasonal produce. A modern hideaway for design lovers and foodies.
  • Le Vieux Castillon promises superb Mediterranean-inspired fare in a dramatic Renaissance setting. Gather at the Table du Castillon for Chef Sullivan Le Ternuec's delectable cuisine, before retreating to one of 33 chic rooms and suites. There's also a fabulous spa!
  • Hostellerie Provençale offers simple rooms with floral bedspreads and exposed stone walls in the centre of Uzès. The guesthouse is lovely and affordable, though the real draw is the restaurant. Famed for delicious dishes showcasing local produce, the kitchen is headed by two terrific Michelin-trained chefs. A delight.
  • La Maison d'Uzès promises a five-star stay. A magnificent 17th-century staircase leads to elegant rooms with granite fireplaces and indulgent bathrooms, whilst the Michelin-starred restaurant packs a real punch when it comes to southern French flavours. Romantic luxury for foodies.

FOR WATERFRONT LUXURY

  • Le Spinaker offers a collection of chic, modern rooms clad in soothing white and grey tones. Its big draw is its impressive setting, right on Port Camargue's marina. An ideal choice for keen sailors, foodies or spa-goers, who can enjoy superb wellness treatments and evenings at the gourmet restaurant within sight of the boats. Exceptional.
