Overlooking the expansive Bay of Pampelonne, Ramatuelle is a serene spot for a restful and relaxing Southern French escape as a couple, or with friends and family. The village itself has heaps of classic Mediterranean charm, with narrow cobbled streets and flower-framed houses, whilst the 5km stretch of beach is brilliant for strolls or sunbathing. Accommodation options are scattered in the surrounding countryside or on the coast, and are well-suited to a whole array of tastes and budgets. Whether you’re travelling with a group of friends or seeking a restorative wellness retreat, our pick of the best places to stay in Ramatuelle has it all.
Interestingly, the name ‘Ramatuelle’ is derived from ‘Rahmatollah’ — the Arabic for ‘Mercy of God’ — reflecting a strong Moorish influence during the 9th and 10th centuries. Little of this can be seen in its present-day architecture, however. Explore, instead, the 17th-century Font-D’Avaou wash house, the ruins of prisons built during the reign of Napoloen III, the striking Eiffel steps on Place Gabriel Péri, and the ornate Notre-Dame de L’Assomption Church. Dine in chic bistros, visit little independent shops, or venture 10km to St-Tropez for top-notch museums and designer boutiques.
Plage de Pampelonne and Plage de l’Escalet are wonderful for swimming and soaking up the sunshine, whilst more active visitors can hike up to Cap Camarat for amazing views, or cycle between vineyards for tours and tastings. Highlights include Domaine La Tourraque and Château Volterra. The best places to stay in Ramatuelle fill up fast during the annual Jazz Festival, so it’s worth booking early!
