About Füssen

At the end of Germany’s Romantic Road — the wonderful route between the fairytale castles of enchanting Bavaria — sits Füssen. Here, you’ll find two of the region’s most beautiful turreted landmarks: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Most of the best places to stay in Füssen boast gorgeous views of at least one of these castles, which are, for many travellers, the main reason to visit. Our Gurus would suggest staying on a little longer, to saunter around the Old Town, or to immerse yourself in the magic of the great outdoors — this is, after all, a very special part of Germany.

Begin with the big-hitters, hiking or driving up the the dazzling Schloss Neuschwanstein. Undoubtedly one of the world’s most romantic castles, this landmark was conjured up by King Ludwig II with the help of a stage set designer rather than an architect. Don’t miss the throne room’s striking mosaic floor, nor the iconic Tristan and Isolde-themed bedroom. Head up to Marienbrücke for the best photos, before journeying across to Schloss Hohenschwangau, where King Ludwig grew up. A neo-Gothic building set atop a 12th-century ruin, this castle feels entirely different, yet remains full of magic.

Delve into the history of King Ludwig and his family at the Museum der Bayerischen Könige, admire the impressive art collection of the Hohes Schloss and clamber around ruined Schloss Falkenstein. The Rococo Wieskirche is another favourite site, whilst many of the best places to stay in Füssen are rich in history in their own right. Return to the Old Town for lovely restaurants and cafés after days of hiking, skiing, parasailing and hang-gliding. Swims in the Alpsee, Obersee or Mittlerersee are wonderful, too.

  • You won't need a car to explore the town itself, but the 'Romantic Road' is best navigated with the flexibility of your own transport. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • Visit during the summer months, with temperatures averaging around 21°C between June and early September for hikes and lake swims.
