Towards the western edge of the Cyclades, Sifnos is a tranquil island with an enchantingly laid-back atmosphere. There’s something special about the light here, illuminating sparkling seas framed by little harbours where boats bob in the water below strings of whitewashed villages, terraced olive and almond trees, and ridges crowned with wildflowers. Relaxed holidaymakers in search of seclusion will be delighted by this island — and by the peaceful, intimate character of the best places to stay on Sifnos.
Most attractions are clustered around the main town of Apollonia, where you’ll find shops, eateries and the interesting Folk Art Museum. In fact, Sifnos’ wealth originated from its gold and silver mining, which in turn revealed a clay which makes the beautiful pottery for which the island continues to be known. Don't miss popping in to the fascinating artisanal workshops, some of which offer classes and demonstrations, which continue to produce this traditional pottery.
For an insight into Sifnos’ rich past, visit the Mycenaean acropolis — just south of Apollonia — or venture to Kastro, the island’s medieval capital. Spot Roman sarcophagi and ancient columns built into the village’s lanes and residences as you wander up towards the hilltop for dazzling ocean views. The archaeological museum is also intriguing. Artemonas, another hilltop community, boasts the loveliest examples of white cubist Cycladic architecture. The striking Chrysopigi Monastery, close to inviting Chrysopigi beach, and the protected cove of Vathi beach are also local landmarks. Ramblers can follow ancient paths along the ridges, connecting one village — and, by extension, many of the best places to stay in Sifnos — to one another.
