The largest of the Sporades Islands, Skyros is famed for its spectacular rocky coastline and leafy interior, which teems with birdlife. The island’s wild horses are the stuff of legend: Achilles reputedly rode one into Troy. Mythology aside, this laid-back Aegean island is wonderful for family holidays, fun beach breaks with friends or tranquil wellness-focused escapes. Summers are busy, but the best places to stay in Skyros remain appealingly relaxed and welcoming.
Begin your explorations in hilltop Skyros Town, where you’ll find the Archaeological Museum and the fascinating Ethnological and Folklore Museum. Catch a performance at the nearby Faltaits Theatre, or take a guided tour of town for a sense of the island’s long and intriguing history, and its burgeoning modern-day craft scene. The winding streets of the old town are lined with ceramics, wood carving and embroidery workshops aplenty — some of which host excellent art classes. The intricate frescoes of the Monastery of Agios Georgios, on the edge of town, are also not to be missed.
Head further afield for guided birding walks, scenic sailing trips around the island’s coves and beaches, and to see the grave of First World War poet Rupert Brooke, who died on a ship moored off the island in 1915. Scuba diving and snorkelling trips come highly recommended, as do relaxed beach days. Most of the best places to stay in Skyros are just a short walk from the sea — perfect for soaking up the island’s magic.
