About Agropoli

Agropoli is spectacularly positioned on a rocky promontory, overlooking its protected port in the peaceful southern arc of the Gulf of Salerno. Founded as a Greek colony, like neighbour Paestum, Agropoli has the remains of an Athenian-style temple at its highest point overlooking the gulf, a spot which is now occupied by its defensive Norman castle. It’s also the liveliest centre along the Cilentan Coast, with its rocky, but lush, interior and beautiful, sandy beaches. The best places to stay in Agropoli are ideal for families and explorers, they’re more affordable than our Amalfi Coast picks, but along similar lines and our top pick is a family-friendly villa hotel in a peaceful spot just outside town.

In the summer months, Agropoli is popular with Italian families. There are lots of lovely, sandy beaches along the coast in both directions and the old town is a medieval charmer, with the castle and decorative gates in the monumental city walls. Within them is a maze of winding alleyways, opening out onto pretty piazzas lined with palazzos, bars, cafes and restaurants. Agropoli also has charming little shops tucked into the walls, and stone walkways interspersed with little bars. But there’s also a more modern part of town, with nightspots, shops, and more bars and restaurants.

The best places to stay in Agropoli are also convenient for the Cilento National Park, and make an excellent base for exploring the region — many ferries use this sheltered fishing port, and, being the largest centre on the Cilentian Coast, Agropoli is a regional transport hub. As well as natural charms, this region has been inhabited since Neolithic times, and there are ruins of all sorts dotted around the landscape, including a recently discovered collection of Byzantine tombs and the medieval ruins of San Francesco's Monastery.

  • The tourist season on the Amalfi Coast, and in the Cilentan Coast region, traditionally begins at Easter, and runs through until the first week of November. The warmest summer months are the busiest time for visitors, but if you’re not restricted on when you travel, and you’re interested in seeing this region’s historic treasures, like Paestum, Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as its beautiful beaches, then it might be more enjoyable to visit between April and mid-June, or September through mid-October.  If you’re here to explore the Cilento National Park you may also want to plan your visit away from the very hottest months. Even during winter, Agropoli gets close to eight hours of sunshine a day.
