Giulianova is idyllically situtated on Abruzzo’s Adriatic coast, but that’s only a small part of the town’s charm. It was designed by one man, who in the 1470s decided to model Giulianova on the idea of an ideal city, radiating out from its eight-sided cathedral, along grand roads, and surrounded by a protective wall with eight towers. The medieval centre of town still stands today, well protected from damage and over-tourism, and this centre is where we’ve found some of the best places to stay in Giulianova, including a family-friendly seafood restaurant with rooms, close to the ocean, and a charmingly converted villa a block back.

Giulianova’s towers still stand too, and some have been converted into museums and galleries. The historic part of town has a number of exceptionally charming churches, and beautiful small boutiques, so you can easily do more than enjoy the Adriatic coastline. Fishing is still a huge industry here, so its coastline doesn’t feel especially touristy. On one side are the traditional fishing huts and ships, and on the opposite side is the marina, which is a forest of elegant masts from yachts and other pleasure boats. Beyond that are the famed long sandy beaches.

Travel Information

• Abruzzo International Airport, also called Pescara Abruzzo Airport, is Gulianova’s local airport, about 40 minutes' drive, or an hour and ten minutes by bus. ITA Airways and Ryanair are the main airlines to use the airport. Ancona Airport may also be useful, it's just over an hour away by road, or about two hours by train.

• Giulianova is on Abruzzo’s Adriatic coast, which has a very Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters. November through January can be rainy, but Giulianova is a fairly beach-y destination, so most visitors should plan to visit between May and September. Easter in Italy is quite a special time, with lots of celebration, and some tourist business reopen around Easter, so it’s always worth considering.
