About Puerto del Carmen

A resort town on Lanzarote's southeastern coast, Puerto del Carmen has long been popular with keen beachgoers as well as those looking for a good party. Whether you’re travelling as a couple or with family and friends, it’s a lively choice for a fun-filled holiday in the sunshine. Lanzarote’s warm climate means that the best places to stay in Puerto del Carmen are also very appealing during the spring and late autumn, making it an almost year-round destination.

Puerto del Carmen’s beaches are its biggest draw. The sandy expanses of Playa Grande and Playa Matagorda are dotted with sun loungers in the summer months, when little ones are busy building sandcastles or savouring ice creams, and friends are basking in the sunshine or cooling off in the water. A steady breeze makes these areas ideal for wind surfing and kite surfing, too. Head a little further out for excellent diving, fishing and scenic boat trips. Close to the harbour, laid-back Playa Chica is another favourite.

Amble through the old town to El Varadero to spot fishing boats bobbing in the gentle swell, or pop into the boutiques which line the bustling Avenida de las Playas. This popular beachside boulevard also has restaurants, bars and trendy nightclubs for those eager to keep the party going long past sunset. Sleek and stylish, many of the best places to stay in Puerto del Carmen also boast funky bars of their own.

For families or groups

  • Alondra Suites and Villas sit within large leafy gardens. Offering space for up to four people per unit, these splendid villas — complete with sitting rooms and well-equipped kitchens — are perfect for group trips with guests of all ages. The best villas have private plunge pools, and all guests share access to the Kalma Spa & Wellness Centre.
  • Aqua Suites, not far from the ocean, has understated modern rooms and suites, some with space for little ones on sofa beds. Life centres around the cooling lagoon pool. Expect clean lines, light blue and yellow tones against largely white-washed rooms, and a friendly feel. Great for families or groups of friends.

For couples

  • La Isla y El Mar promises a real sense of serenity, with a soothing spa and spacious suites with crisp white linens and aquamarine accents. Honeymoon suites have ocean-facing hot tubs. With a hip pool bar, two restaurants and funky interior styling, this is a brilliant choice for a romantic holiday.
  • Lani's Suites de Luxe is a sophisticated seaside hotel with swish contemporary suites. White-on-white interiors feel fresh and stylish, and make the dazzling sea views all the more striking. A luxurious adults-only spot with delicious Mediterranean cuisine and direct access to the beach. Fabulous.

Travel information

  • Fly to César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, just 10 minutes' drive from Puerto del Carmen. There are also regular airport shuttles into Arrecife and a network of buses heading across the island from there. Alternatively, most hotels will be happy to arrange an airport pick up in advance.
  • It's wonderful to explore Lanzarote with the freedom of your own transport. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • Expect warm summers, with temperatures hovering around 25°C between June and August. For fewer crowds and cooler weather, travel in April, May or late September, when there's still plenty of sunshine — though the sea will definitely be colder at these times!
