Perched on a plain at the foot of the rocky Sierra de Castellar mountains, Zafra was once a key trading point on the ancient Via de la Plata through Extremadura. Today’s it’s a town rich in history, with magnificent architecture and stacks of charm. Dubbed ‘Little Seville’, Zafra is hugely popular with culture aficionados, many of whom drive up from Seville for the day. We think Zafra is a worthy destination in its own right, however, and have highlighted a sumptuous restored mansion for those looking to linger a little longer. A historic gem with friendly hosts and affordable rates, our Gurus believe it’s the best place to stay in Zafra.
You can’t miss the 15th-century Alcazar, an impressive fortress at the heart of the medieval quarter. Step inside to marvel at the palatial interiors, and wander through the narrow surrounding streets to admire ancient stone walls, the beautiful arches of the Plaza Grande and the pretty Plaza Chic. The Church of La Candeleria is particularly impressive, and keen architecture buffs will appreciate multiple convents and private residences dating back hundreds of years. For further insight into the region’s past, visit the Museum of Santa Clara.
Head out of town to clamber up to the Castillo del Castellar — a dramatic rock formation — and to follow hiking and cycling trails. Hot summers can make outdoor activities quite challenging. Consider travelling in spring or autumn for fewer crowds and great rates at the best place to stay in Zafra.
