About Huddersfield
The market town of Huddersfield is pretty and historic: its position between three rivers was perfect for making textiles in the Victorian era, and Huddersfield has some really charming Victorian architecture, including its Grade I listed railway station. In fact Huddersfield ranks number three in the country for number of listed buildings, after London and Bristol. But it’s also neighbours with the picturesque Colne and Holme valleys, lush green expanses of gently rolling hills and dales. For our Gurus the best places to stay in Huddersfield share the region’s historic look, and great views. They like a great value pub with rooms, and a romantic Georgian conversion, with luxurious decor.
Once you’ve dropped your bags off at your hotel, your next port of call should be Castle Hill. Not only is the view of Huddersfield and its surrounds fantastic, it’s also got the Victoria Tower, a tall tower built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. From here if you stroll around you’re likely to come across Huddersfield Town Hall, Beaumont Public Park, St. Peter’s Church, the Huddersfield Broad Canal and Huddersfield Narrow Canal (you can navigate both by narrow boat).
If you’re using the best places to stay in Huddersfield as a base for exploring the region you should still head for Castle Hill first, but you may also want to take in the Marsden Moor Estate, a beautiful region of common moorland surrounding the village of Marsden with its valleys, reservoirs, peaks and crags. The National Trust now manages the estate, and they’ve made it possible to see the area’s historic structures too, ranging from pre-Roman remains to industrial relics of the great railway age. Beyond the area you can see from Castle Hill, are the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District.

Best Pubs with Rooms
- The Foxglove is a charming country inn in the scenic Burton Dean Valley (just outside Huddersfield), and the perfect country escape. From the outside it looks like a Tudor era pub, with black beams and whitewashed walls, but it looks much younger on the inside, with beams and flagstones downstairs, but also cosy, country-contemporary rooms upstairs. There are 23 rooms and suites in all, with some great family configurations. The pub serves up the local ales with pride, and a menu of British classics.
For Couples
- Manor House Lindley is an artfully converted Georgian mansion with a Grade II listing, and 11 rooms and suites to the north of Huddersfield. The honey-stone exterior is impressive, rather than grand, but inside there’s a more luxurious look, with House of Hackney prints, plenty of velvet, and plush fabrics and furnishings. Manor House Lindley has two restaurants, a tea lounge, and an atmospheric bar, so there’s plenty of opportunity to indulge.
